before & after - this spanish colonial revival style house in arizona was transformed into a contemporary home
july 19, 2018the ranch mine have recently transformed a spanish colonial revival style house into the ‘red rocks’ residence, a contemporary house that sits against the side of camelback mountain in phoenix, arizona.here’s a before photo of the house. the homeowners were frustrated by the thick columns that interrupted the views, the heavy clay tile roof, dark beams, and the floor plan that focused more on a ceremonial entry than the indoor/outdoor lifestyle they craved.claire and cavin costello of the ranch mine, stripped back the additive design features, leaving a simple, 2 story stucco box, of which they added an addition to.a custom pivot gate by bang bang designs, features a decorative hexagonal pattern and guides guests to the home.the gate opens up to covered patio that’s lined with misters to keep the space cool all year round in the desert heat.the patio also provides access to a hot tub with expansive views of the desert.stairs with hidden lighting lead down to the pool area that’s lined with planters.inside, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors frame the view from the living room and kitchen.exposed concrete floor, like in the kitchen, was poured on the first floor to cover the extensive amount of work that needed to happen due to the failing plumbing and structural infrastructure of the existing house.the concrete complements the fairly neutral palette throughout the house of walnut and white cabinetry with a variety of quartz counters a...

movie scripts and flip books inspired the wood slat interior of this cinema in shanghai
july 20, 20184n design architects have recently completed the design of palace cinema, in shanghai, china.the designers, fascinated by the film industry and inspired by many great directors of the past and our present, recognized the importance of the ‘script booklet’ that forms the storyline and design of every spoken line in the movies.at the same time they were also inspired by animation flip books that form a moving animation from numerous still images in a booklet form.as a result of their inspiration, the design team created a space that they believe best represented the form of the ‘script’ booklet and ‘flipbook’ at the same time. they used wood slats throughout the interior to represent the forms they were inspired by.the wood slats cover the walls and columns, like the ones below that also use mirrors to reflect the lights.lighting within the wood slats is used to highlight the theater numbers, while angled slats that follow the ceiling, create a tunnel-like experience leading to the theaters.get the contemporist daily email newsletter – sign up here

this modern and masculine apartment has a smart glass wall that can hide the bedroom from view
july 13, 201833by architecture have recently completed the interior design of a modern apartment in bucha, ukraine, for their client, a young businessman.before looking at further photos of the apartment, here’s the floor plan that shows how the apartment has an unconventional shape.the dark interior palette uses a variety of materials throughout its design, such as brick, natural african black stone, onyx, leather, copper ,wood etc.a large glass wall that divides the living from the bedroom has been installed using a “smart glass” system. the opaque glass wall hides the bedroom from view for more privacy, however it can also become transparent to let light travel throughout the interior.the open plan areas of the apartment are home to the living room, the kitchen / dining area, and a working space. in order to add a touch of brightness to the apartment, a panel of backlit white onyx framed by copper edging, is featured in the kitchen.in the bedroom, the brick accent wall becomes a backdrop for a lighting sculpture.one of the challenges the designers faced was to create a full wardrobe area in such a small space. to solve this issue, they created a movable wardrobe, that at the click of a button, it moves half of the wardrobe away from the wall, allowing access to the side closest to the wall.at the request of their client, a freestanding bathtub has been positioned on the platform next to the wardrobe, so that views of the city from the bedroom window can be seen fro...
