the nowhere restaurant features stairs inspired by mc. escher artwork
september 18, 2018architecture and design firm stu/d/o, have completed ‘nowhere’, a new rooftop bar and restaurant in bangkok, thailand.when coming up with the concept for the restaurant, the designers reinterpreted the idea of “nowhere” into the concept of the juxtaposition between reality and surrealism, which is represented through the use of an architectural element: stairs.traditionally, stairs have been used to connect different spaces and lead people to different levels. however, in this restaurant, the stairs were given a new interpretation, instead of leading somewhere, it leads to ‘nowhere’, like the idea by mc. escher’s artwork, “relativity.”the stairs are the main feature, connecting the functions and spaces altogether. designed as two continuous loops, the stairs create different functions such as seats, tables, bar, and a communal area.as the restaurant is open throughout the day and into the night, the changing sky can be seen through a long skylight. the loops of the stairs are designed to link the entire space from the first step to the last, where it vanishes into the sky, accenting the concept of ‘going nowhere’.here’s a look at the layout of the stairs that shows the loops.design: stu/d/o  – project team: apichart srirojanapinyo, chanasit cholasuek, park lertchanyakul, thanipath thanawuttimanas | lighting designer: incontrast design studio | structural engineer: darat likitthaveechokget the contemporist daily email newsletter ?...

hundreds of bow-tie shaped aluminum pieces make up this new sculpture in portland
september 21, 2018los angeles based artist rob ley, has created ‘ambiguous’, a new modern sculpture that sits in front of the education center at oregon zoo in portland.the conceptual approach for this public artwork is based on the education center’s interpretive theme that “small things matter,” particularly how many small parts contribute to a whole.the sculpture is composed of hundreds of small bow-tie shaped elements with unique-angled bends and rivets that turn the separate pieces into a singular, monolithic form.rob ley explains, “this piece takes inspiration from the similarities seen when studying various forms that mark the beginning of life. seeds, spores, eggs and pollen exhibit fascinating tectonic and textural qualities which are unique to the species, yet ambiguous when compared to one another.”from a distance, the sculpture is seen as a one large form.however, when viewed closer, it’s seen as many small pieces coming together to create a single unit.the sculpture is created entirely from bead blasted stainless steel, with a yellow powder-coated interior surface.get the contemporist daily email newsletter – sign up here

the nowhere restaurant features stairs inspired by mc. escher artwork
september 18, 2018architecture and design firm stu/d/o, have completed ‘nowhere’, a new rooftop bar and restaurant in bangkok, thailand.when coming up with the concept for the restaurant, the designers reinterpreted the idea of “nowhere” into the concept of the juxtaposition between reality and surrealism, which is represented through the use of an architectural element: stairs.traditionally, stairs have been used to connect different spaces and lead people to different levels. however, in this restaurant, the stairs were given a new interpretation, instead of leading somewhere, it leads to ‘nowhere’, like the idea by mc. escher’s artwork, “relativity.”the stairs are the main feature, connecting the functions and spaces altogether. designed as two continuous loops, the stairs create different functions such as seats, tables, bar, and a communal area.as the restaurant is open throughout the day and into the night, the changing sky can be seen through a long skylight. the loops of the stairs are designed to link the entire space from the first step to the last, where it vanishes into the sky, accenting the concept of ‘going nowhere’.here’s a look at the layout of the stairs that shows the loops.design: stu/d/o  – project team: apichart srirojanapinyo, chanasit cholasuek, park lertchanyakul, thanipath thanawuttimanas | lighting designer: incontrast design studio | structural engineer: darat likitthaveechokget the contemporist daily email newsletter ?...

hundreds of bow-tie shaped aluminum pieces make up this new sculpture in portland
september 21, 2018los angeles based artist rob ley, has created ‘ambiguous’, a new modern sculpture that sits in front of the education center at oregon zoo in portland.the conceptual approach for this public artwork is based on the education center’s interpretive theme that “small things matter,” particularly how many small parts contribute to a whole.the sculpture is composed of hundreds of small bow-tie shaped elements with unique-angled bends and rivets that turn the separate pieces into a singular, monolithic form.rob ley explains, “this piece takes inspiration from the similarities seen when studying various forms that mark the beginning of life. seeds, spores, eggs and pollen exhibit fascinating tectonic and textural qualities which are unique to the species, yet ambiguous when compared to one another.”from a distance, the sculpture is seen as a one large form.however, when viewed closer, it’s seen as many small pieces coming together to create a single unit.the sculpture is created entirely from bead blasted stainless steel, with a yellow powder-coated interior surface.get the contemporist daily email newsletter – sign up here
