young mare badly injured when sky lantern ‘lands on her tail’
the owner of a point-to-point horse who suffered a serious leg injury after a sky lantern is thought to have hit her has called for a total ban on the lanterns’ sale.bastante, a five-year-old mare owned by the plantation prosecco partnership, was found outside her field on saturday at about 10.30pm. as it was dark, her injuries were not visible and she was turned back out.“but the next day, in the light, we saw her,” syndicate member sarah sladen told h&h.“we were wondering what had happened and why, then we saw a strand of plain wire on the fence had broken.“then in the field, i found a clump of her hair and a sky lantern a few feet away, and her tail was singed.”“putting two and two together”, sarah believes the lantern had landed on the mare’s tail and although the lanterns fall when they run out of fuel, it must still have been hot enough to burn her.“it looks like that made her bolt and she’s jumped the fence and caught her leg,” sarah added. “there are various marks on her but the bad one is the back leg.”warning: very graphic image of the wound and the tail.sarah’s vet, who is also a member of the syndicate, was soon on the scene and said despite the serious leg injury bastante had not sustained any tendon damage.“it will scar but it could have been a lot worse,” sarah said. “she’s sound, but she’s on box rest so that’s the end of her summer holiday, after only three weeks.”sarah would now like to see a total ban on the sale ...

mules are allowed to compete after british dressage u-turn: #justiceforwallace
the rider of the mule who has been hitting headlines after he was banned from being registered with british dressage (bd) is “over the moon” the ban has now been lifted.h&h reported last week that christie mclean had been refused bd club membership for wallace the great as she was told only horses and ponies may be registered.the story was picked up by national newspapers and websites, and it emerged that although bd had told h&h it “takes its lead from the fei” which also does not allow mules, this was not correct.bd this morning (4 july) issued a statement saying it had considered mule registration in full at a board of directors’ meeting yesterday.“following consultation with the fei, the board has taken the decision to harmonise our rules with the international federation by adopting the same wording,” it added.“while our current rules refer to horses and ponies without a full definition, the fei general regulations 2018 are more specific and state: ‘horse: refers also to a pony or other member of the genus equus unless the context requires otherwise. a horse shall be born from a mare.“this definition would allow mules to compete and therefore this change will be implemented with immediate effect and reflected in the british dressage rules.”when told of the change, christie told h&h: “wow!“i did not expect this to happen. i just thought we might be able to raise a small amount of awareness of the other equines of the world; i’m over the moon.??...

how can you prove a horse is yours? h&h explains...
rebecca stojak, an associate solicitor specialising in equine law, explains the steps you need to take in order to prove the ownership of a horse or pony in the uk we don’t currently have one single document that proves ownership of a horse or pony.a horse’s passport may be proof of identity of the horse, but it does not confirm ownership. so the question is, what does prove ownership of a horse?in an ideal world, when you buy your horse you will have a dated receipt for any deposit and the purchase price of the horse. this should also detail who sold and bought the horse, for how much and how the purchase price was paid.there should also, ideally, be acontract for the purchase of your horse. the contract doesn’t have to be a long document but should, for maximum protection, be drawn up by a specialist equine solicitor. the contract should contain the following, among other things:the date the agreement/contract is madethe names and addresses of the seller and the buyerdetails and a description of the horse, which could include:• the name of the horse• passport number• freezemark number (if your horse has one)• microchip number (which matches the microchip number on the horse’s passport)• height of the horse• colour of the horse (and any distinguishing markings)• sex of the horse• age of the horsethat the seller confirms that they own the horse and that all the details given (above) are accurate and true;details of the deposit (if there was one) for ex...

spotting the signs of sand colic *h&h vip*
remember mixing mud pies on the beach, watching the sand sink to the bottom of a bucket of seawater? now imagine the weight of that sludgy sediment resting deep in your horse’s stomach, and it’s easy to see why a case of sand colic is considered a medical emergency.“sand is heavy and will fall to the lowest point of the abdomen if ingested,” says richard stephenson mrcvs of pool house equine clinic, explaining that sandy soil can be swallowed when grass is closely cropped.“over time, the sand accumulates and can silt up the colon at the base of the caecum. the sand can cause an obstruction in the narrower parts of the colon, such as the pelvic flexure, so that food can’t move around easily and gas accumulates.“a heavy concentration of sand in the gut can dry out if the horse becomes dehydrated, setting like concrete,” he adds. “the weight can cause the colon to become displaced, or twisted, so that it can’t return to its usual position.”rough stuffare there ever any early warning signs to suggest that a horse is eating sand? “sand accumulation can cause chronic diarrhoea and sometimes loss of weight,” says richard, explaining that the problem can be missed during weight-loss investigations. the sand can irritate the lining of the colon, like sandpaper, creating low-grade pain and sometimes subtle colic. in most cases, however, the colic is dramatic.”to diagnose the problem, a sample of the horse’s droppings is mixed with water in a plastic rectal...

stud welcomes ‘miraculous’ identical twin blanket-spot buckskin colts
a devon stud has been shocked by the arrival of rare identical twin foals.the matching buckskin, blanket-spot colts have defied the odds and are reported to be happy and healthy at three weeks old.“the vet couldn’t really believe it,” said gassons farm stud proprietor tania mackee. “they are quite a curiosity to everybody.“we kept the news quiet for a while as i was half expecting them not to make it. twins are every breeder’s nightmare and you have a certain feeling you’ve failed that they weren’t spotted at the time of conception — one would have been pinched if they were.“it’s nothing short of miraculous they have survived,” she added.the unusual pair formed from one zygote which split to form two embryos, and weren’t picked up on pregnancy scans.twin pregnancies can cause serious complications for both mare and foals as the placenta struggles to nourish both foetuses in horses. about 80% abort in late pregnancy and if carried to term, foaling complications are common.twins usually occur when a mare ovulates from two follicles, leading to two fertilised eggs (fraternal twins) — making identical twins like these especially rare.their delivery was all the more dramatic as it presented as a dangerous “red bag”; the premature detachment of the placenta which means the foal is not being sustained by its mother’s circulation.“that was the scarier part,” said tania. “i was doing what i’d normally do and ‘directing’ and i said ‘quick...

contact lenses or glasses: what are the pros and cons of wearing them when riding?
if you go about your everyday life wearing glasses or contact lenses then it’s almost a certainty that you will need to do the same when you go riding. for the majority of people which form of eyewear they choose seems to comes down to personal preference, but we take a look at the advantages and disadvantages to both types when riding.“i much prefer the vision you get with contact lenses compared to glasses. when i had an eye infection two years ago, i had to go six weeks with glasses and the difference was noticeable,” says four-star event rider victoria madsen.while contact lenses allow for a wider field of vision, they also attract dust and can prove painful if you get dirt or grit in them, as cheltenham gold cup winner and former jockey andrew thornton can attest.“i’ve worn glasses since i was 18-months-old but i wasn’t allowed to wear them to race in so i had to learn to wear contacts,” says andrew, who was one of the first jockeys to wear contact lenses and was subsequently given the nickname ‘lensio’ by his fellow weighing room comrades.“they never bothered me except when it was wet and muddy or when i got a bit of grit in them which stung like hell. when you are schooling on wet mornings they can steam up so you have to pull your goggles down, but you get used to it.”damp and dusty conditions can also affect those who wear glasses and the lenses will require regular wiping or cleaning. if you become hot and sweaty when you ride, you may find tha...

‘he’s been such a good horse to us’: pippa funnell takes over the ride on billy congo
on sunday 24 june, william funnell joined an elite band of riders to have won the hickstead derby four times. but what is even more outstanding is that he did it on a third generation home-bred.his winning ride billy buckingham is by william’s european gold medal-winning stallion billy congo — himself a product of the prolific breeding operation at the world famous billy stud, being by vechta out of the five-star jumping mare billy autumn (x animo elite).and the same week that billy congo’s son won the al shira’aa derby at hickstead, the now 17-year-old congo was jumping into third place in a 1.35m class at the venue — with william’s wife pippa at the helm.pippa produced billy congo in the stallion’s early career and the pair have been reunited recently to compete in some two-star showjumping classes.“at 17, i don’t want him running round speed classes and he’s been such a good horse to us, winning around €750,000, so pippa jumping him at two-star level is perfect,” william told h&h.“he’s a lovely character, he loves the jumping and it’s nice for him to be out having fun — and actually it’s nice for breeders to see him out, too, especially with pip riding him, who is probably a better fit. he’s a good height, but let’s put it this way — i’m worried if i don’t go on a diet i’m going to break him!“it’s important to breed a nice horse, but so are the basics of the horse’s production — they need to be correctly trained and a l...

steven ashworth: children and hounds — let the chaos commence! *h&h vip*
“nooo!” i call, as yet another random object is posted through kennel railings by grubby little hands with a cheeky laugh — just one of the many joys of having children growing up in kennels. like any young entry, a child fitting into kennel life brings a mixture of emotions, excitement all round, an abundance of energy and desperation to help, so let the chaos commence!the usual “kennel timetable” is thrown out the window as jobs take twice as long with a 20-month old apprentice. wanting to encourage the keen youngster means forfeiting your time to doing things twice over, and then — properly — a third time as he is soon distracted by a low-flying pigeon.“nap when your baby naps,” the professionals will tell you, clearly having never worked in kennels. their mid-morning nap in the tack room leaves us running around at full speed, powering through as many of the less “child-friendly” jobs in kennels. first bit of advice: this is when to wash kennels down. toddlers, dog muck and high-pressure hosepipes are a nasty combination that no one wants to endure before breakfast.naps never last long enough and the child is soon up and busy making mischief. note to self, must close all doors and lock all latches, as the toddler’s ability to walk means being able to reach handles and come into kennels to greet me who, in the mad rush, has left the nearest lodge until last and filth is now spread all up baby’s trousers and new clarks shoes.always add at least an ...

a trio of ponies who were captured in a public tennis court are seeking new homes.andre agassi, pancho gonzales and rafael nadal — as they have been fondly named — were abandoned in december.they were left to run loose in a bishop auckland park for more than a week, until some nearby residents tempted them into some tennis courts and closed the gates.one of the rescuers called the rspca and a british horse society welfare officer provided more hay, water and a padlock for the gate to secure the ponies for the night so arrangements could be made for a more permanent solution.the “tennis court trio” were then taken in by the rspca and no owners came forward to claim them.with wimbledon under way, the charity is hoping the ponies will find “their perfect game, set and match”.“the boys are around one year old, and will be approximately 13hh when they are fully grown so potentially could make really smart children’s riding ponies,” said rspca equine rehoming officer jacqui wilson, adding the trio do not need to be rehomed together.article continues below…you might also be interested in:andre agassi, pancho gonzales and rafael nadal are seeking homes after they were caught in a snowy tennis courts by…from gentle hacking to fast-paced polo, london has it all, and a city job doesn’t mean riding has to stop…from the strange looks you will receive on the tube to wondering whether you will ever leave the confines of…“andre, pancho and rafael are really frie...

are these the most amazing losers’ prizes ever?
in a sport like polo, where there can only be one winner, you’d think being on the losing team would mean going home despondent and empty-handed. not so for the team that were beaten to the royal windsor cup at guards polo club on 24 june — the uk’s premier medium-goal tournament.andrey borodin’s defending park place side may have lost 11-7 to la dolfina on the field after a hard-fought match but thanks to the generous tournament sponsors, japanese company out-sourcing! inc, each of the park place players went home having won a two-night trip to paris — talk about sweetening the blow. they also received a hand-made kabuto helmet each, traditionally worn by ancient japanese warriors, including the samurai.the queen presents the prizesof course for the winning team, which consisted of young british players josh cork and kian hall, plus world number one adolfo cambiaso and his 12-year-son adolfo ‘poroto’ cambiaso jr, the prizes were even better.as well as lifting the magnificent royal windsor cup — guards polo club’s oldest piece of silverware — each won a four-night trip to japan, as well as diamond jewellery and pearl suit pins, and larger versions of the kabuto helmet, while poroto, who was named most valuable player, was also presented with a traditionally-made miniature set of ancient japanese warrior armour. his father had his hands full after the presentation too — he received a traditional japanese horse stature after his seven-year-old mare cruiser...

don’t lose your cool — how to survive the cross-country start box
if you are going eventing, you will encounter a cross-country start box. it’s an area with a real buzz of excitement about it, both for horse and rider. so how can you help keep a lid on your nerves and your horse’s excitement?here’s some helpful pointers from new zealand international event rider, jesse campbell (pictured), who has several three- and four-star completions to his name:1. it’s so important to keep yourself relaxed. try asking the starter how their day is going or make a joke with them. horses pick up on how you’re feeling.2. keep a longer rein. allowing the horse to have its head will help them stay relaxed.3. walk backwards and forwards through the start box so the horse gets used to being around the box and that it’s no big deal when you enter to start your round.4. enter the start box from the front. this will stop the horse rushing through and getting upset.5. get used to how long it takes to turn your horse around in the box. five seconds is a long time and horses can get tense if they have to stop while being counted down.6. keep a slow pace to the first fence. if you come out of the box like a bullet, the horse will learn this and it will be very difficult to get them to settle.now you’ve got that advice in mind, take a look at these eventing competitions available to enter where you can put this advice into practice…pony club one-day eventdate: 8 julyvenue: portman hunt pony club, chisel farm, blandford forumdetails: “this fun and fri...
