how apple made its new apple watch faces – macstories
apple has a variety of new watch faces built into watchos 5. a couple are exclusive to the new series 4 watch, but older models will still have access to faces like fire and water, vapor, and liquid metal. what you may not know about these faces is that they were all created using practical effects. josh rubin at cool hunting writes: talking to alan dye, vice president of user interface design at apple, about this particular project he shared that “it’s more of a story about the design team. we could have done this digitally, but we shot this all in a studio. it’s so indicative of how the design team works—bringing our best and varied talents together to create these faces.” surely it would have been cheaper to just render fire, water, liquid metal and vapor, but this is what makes apple special—putting in the time and effort to do something right and real might only be noticed directly by a few, but is certainly felt by all. to see this watch face project in action, check out the behind-the-scenes video below.

a roundup of apps updated for ios 12 and watchos 5 – macstories
it's been a busy week of app updates. we've already covered many of them, but there are always more good examples of apps that show off feature of ios 12 like siri shortcuts or watchos 5's new functionality. so, we've collected some additional favorite updates from this past week from federico, john, and ryan.apple's new portrait effects matte. source: halidejohn: ios 12 introduced a new portrait effects matte (pem) that camera apps can use to capture detailed depth data. the results from pem are significantly better than camera apps could previously produce, especially for hair and glasses. the main limitation of the pem is that it works for human subjects only. with the new technology, halide applies a custom background blur that is different than the one apple’s camera app uses.halide, which we’ve covered before on macstories, has also added support for shortcuts. halide’s advanced settings include a ‘set up siri shortcuts’ button that opens a view explaining how siri shortcuts work and links to halide’s settings in apple’s settings app. there, under siri & search are a list of saved and suggested siri shortcuts.source: halidewhat you can add in siri & search depends on what parts of halide you’ve used recently. one of my favorite shortcuts is the most simple: you can fire the shutter to take a photo hands-free. it’s like a voice-controlled remote control, which is perfect for taking a shot without worrying that you’re making your photo blurry by t...

how to trigger ifttt applets with ios 12’s new shortcuts app and siri – macstories
among the actions that didn't make the transition from workflow to the new shortcuts app for ios 12, built-in support for triggering ifttt applets (formerly known as `recipes`) is perhaps the most annoying one. with just a few taps, workflow's old 'trigger ifttt applet' action allowed you to assemble workflows that combined the power of ios integrations with ifttt's hundreds of supported services. the ifttt action acted as a bridge between workflow and services that didn't offer native support for the app, such as google sheets, spotify, and several smart home devices.fortunately, there's still a way to integrate the just-released shortcuts app with ifttt. the method i'm going to describe below involves a bit more manual setup because it's not as nicely integrated with shortcuts as the old action might have been. in return however, you'll unlock the ability to enable ifttt triggers using siri on your ios devices, apple watch, and homepod – something that was never possible with workflow's original ifttt support. let's take a look.configure an ifttt webhook as a triggerthe basic idea behind this is to use ifttt's webhooks as triggers for an applet. ifttt describes webhooks as best suited for diy projects or companies that want to get started integrating their platform with ifttt. in practice, a webhook is a unique url that accepts a request. once the url is `pinged`, ifttt recognizes it as a trigger and runs the applet. in the slightly more advanced version,...

austin mann’s review of the iphone xs cameras – macstories
in addition to the early slate of iphone reviews from the press, it's become tradition in recent years for each iphone to be graded as a camera by professional photographer austin mann. i especially enjoyed mann's review this year of the iphone xs camera system. he writes: most of the time my expectations for camera upgrades on “s” years aren’t so high, but after shooting with the iphone xs for a week, i can confidently say it’s a huge camera upgrade. there’s a lot of little improvements, but smart hdr definitely takes the cake. this is a feature and technology that improves virtually everything you capture with your iphone camera. i think you’ll be really thrilled when you experience the results yourself. as i shared in last week's issue of macstories weekly for club macstories, the iphone xs and xr announcements caught me by surprise in that i expected there to be more change in the devices compared to last year's iphone x. i've ordered a xs max, but the primary reason for my upgrade was the additional screen real estate compared to my x; bigger display aside, september's keynote didn't provide much of a compelling reason for me to purchase a new phone this year. however, mann's review and that of john gruber have helped provide much-needed additional detail on the camera upgrades in the xs, which sound impressively significant.one of the standout lines in mann's review for me comes near the beginning, where he says, `iphone xs captures what you...

homecam 1.5 adds shortcuts to view live homekit camera feeds in siri, search, and the shortcuts app – macstories
i previously covered homecam, a homekit utility by indie developer aaron pearce, as a superior way to watch live video streams from multiple homekit cameras. in addition to a clean design and straightforward approach (your cameras are displayed in a grid), what set homecam apart was the ability to view information from other homekit accessories located in the same room of a camera and control nearby lights without leaving the camera ui. compared to apple's approach to opening cameras in the clunky home app, homecam is a nimble, must-have utility for anyone who owns multiple homekit cameras and wants to tune into their video feeds quickly. with the release of ios 12, homecam is gaining one of the most impressive and useful implementations of siri shortcuts i've seen on the platform yet.homecam 1.5, available today on the app store, brings a variety of welcome improvements to the core app experience. for instance, the grid has been slightly redesigned with connection status indicators and you can rearrange your cameras with drag and drop. there's support for keyboard shortcuts on ipad when you're viewing a camera, and you can now lock the app with a passcode, touch id, or face id to protect your video feeds from prying eyes. but these aren't my favorite changes in homecam 1.5. what i find remarkable in this update is the ability to invoke any camera stream as a shortcut either from siri, the search screen, or the shortcuts app, and watch a live video feed without having to...

the iphone 4s – macstories
we are used to a fall release schedule when it comes to iphones, but that hasn't always been the case. the first four iphones came out in the summer, usually after being announced at wwdc.2011's iphone 4s changed that for good, and in some ways that phone draws parallels to the new iphone xs. both are the second generation of a radical new design, and both boast improved cameras, networking, and battery life. that's not to mention how siri is at the heart of the ios version they both ship with.the s stands for...specs?officially only the s in the 3gs has ever been defined as speed by apple, but it certainly could have been true for the 4s as well. the phone featured the a5 processor out of the ipad 2. this chipset included a dual-core processor which ran twice as fast as the single-core processor in the iphone 4. onboard was a new apple-designed isp for image processing, but the real star was the dual-core gpu that was seven times faster than the one before it.this made the iphone 4s noticeably more powerful than its predecessor, as jason snell wrote in his review at the time: the results of my general-performance tests showed the iphone 4s to be roughly twice as fast as the iphone 4. apple claims graphics performance on the iphone 4s has been boosted even more by the graphics component of the a5, with speed gains of as much as 7x. that’s a best-case scenario, but my tests with the glbench pro graphics benchmarking app did show enhanced graphics performance. one 3d t...

a new word of the day app – macstories
today developer and writer benjamin mayo launched his latest iphone app on the app store: daily dictionary. from the app's website: one word every day. words that you have known but long forgotten. and some that are entirely new. daily dictionary is written by real people, not machines. no technical jargon or esoteric science terms. just words you can use to improve your writing and expand your speaking vocabulary. get a word of the day with a push notification, lock screen widget, or ask siri using ios 12 siri shortcuts. i've been testing daily dictionary over the last month, and it's a beautiful app with a design language that feels like a preview in some ways of where apple could take ios in the future. there's lots of big text, buttons that are easy to press, and gestural navigation of the app which works great one-handed. these things are all perfect fits for increasingly larger iphones.regarding the app's functionality, all it really does is provide a different interesting word each day, including pronunciation, definition, example sentence, and list of synonyms. but it does offer that word through a variety of means, which i appreciate: siri shortcuts, notifications, or the app's widget can all feed you each day's word.in many ways daily dictionary reminds me of ‘sodes, the podcast client by jared sinclair that i wrote about earlier this year. it's light on features compared to competing apps, but its interface is a delight to use. and sometimes, a sim...

siri shortcuts, wordpress, and more – macstories
drafts 5 was recently updated to version 5.4, which brings a host of new features. while there is support for ios 12's siri shortcuts and all that they have to offer, there are also other important features that have improved the app's capabilities significantly.siri & shortcuts supportdrafts now supports integration with the shortcuts app via an action step. like with workflow before it, there is a `run shortcut` step which will kick off a shortcuts shortcut1 with template information from a draft. this will replace `run workflow`, though both action steps will remain for those who need features in workflow that aren't yet in the shortcuts app. in most cases, your migrated shortcuts will behave in the same way as before, and will work seamlessly with how you use drafts.thanks to the siri shortcuts support, drafts can now do even more. drafts starts with a couple of built-in shortcuts: capture clipboard and view draft. both of these will show up in settings → siri & search when you first update. over time, other shortcuts for specific actions, drafts, or workspaces will start to show up in your list. drafts provides not only these activity-based shortcuts, but also enables user-created shortcut types as well.using siri, i can enter any workspace, draft, or action that i've created in my setup. i can add them once they show up in settings, or i can tap on the respective menu and edit a single item: within the edit screen, there is an 'add to siri' button in the bot...

the iphone xs’ camera and neural engine – macstories
apple describes the xs as sporting “dual 12mp wide-angle and telephoto cameras”. this will be obvious to most of you, but in case it’s not, they’re not just dual rear-facing lenses, they’re dual rear-facing cameras. the wide-angle and telephoto lenses each have their own sensors. as a user you don’t have to know this, and should never notice it. the iphone xs telephoto camera is the same as in the iphone x — same lens, same sensor. but the iphone xs wide-angle camera has a new lens, which i believe to be superior to last year’s, and an amazing new sensor which is remarkably better than last year’s. and last year’s was very good. anytime an iphone review gets too technical about camera details and photography lexicon, i tend to gloss over it and move on. i'm not a camera expert and i usually don't care about the nitty-gritty. but john gruber's analysis of the iphone xs' camera stack, a12 soc, and seemingly unadvertised improved sensor is one of the most interesting camera-focused iphone reviews i've read in years. i don't want to spoil it – move past the photos at the beginning and keep reading.

google maps adds carplay support – macstories
i just got home from a trip to my local drugstore using google maps’ new carplay integration. once i had a destination selected and was on my way, the experience was fine, as long as i didn’t stray from the path. overall though, from my very preliminary, single test drive, i wasn’t left wanting to switch away from apple maps.google maps (left) and apple maps (right).i like the interface of google maps better than apple maps. as you can see from the comparison screenshot above, google’s app has a cleaner look and isometric viewpoint, which is used even when you are not traveling a route, compared to apple’s more cluttered looking top-down view. to be fair, these two screenshots aren’t zoomed into the same scale, and with a couple of taps of apple maps’ plus button i would have had a similar scale that would show fewer streets and look less busy, but i still prefer google’s look. also, you can see that when i pulled over to the side of the road to take the screenshots, apple maps was confused about which direction i was going, while google maps was not.starting a route.navigation works as you’d expect. i’ll get into picking a destination below, but once you’ve found where you’re going, tap go, and google maps steps you through the route.there were two drawbacks to google maps’ carplay implementation compared to apple’s. first, when i left the route suggested by google maps, i wasn’t redirected based on the change. despite tracking my position, goog...

lookup 5 teaches siri the word of the day and more via shortcuts – macstories
we all know that it's important to regularly learn new things, but often the busyness of life crowds out that learning and we settle into routines that make learning unnecessary. fortunately, one of the things made possible by ios 12 and the new shortcuts app is that you can create your own custom `routines` of sorts with the help of siri, and integrate daily learning into those routines.in that vein, the excellent dictionary app lookup was updated this week to version 5, which takes advantage of siri shortcuts in ios 12 to offer access to the word of the day via siri. the update also brings a new collections feature, additional shortcut options, and more.the word of the day is one of lookup's hallmark features, and each word in the app is beautifully displayed with custom artwork. fortunately, you don't have to miss out on that artwork even when using a shortcut for the word of the day. ask siri what the word is, and the assistant will read the appropriate response while also displaying the word's poster from inside lookup, all without leaving the siri ui.federico mentioned in his ios 12 review that he's been using a word of the day function as part of his 'morning routine' shortcut. this is one of the best ways to put lookup's siri capabilities to use: as part of a larger shortcut created in the shortcuts app. this way, the daily word can be paired with other information you may request regularly, such as the latest news, or your upcoming calendar events. with ios...

the macstories review – macstories
watchos had a bumpy first few years. some poor decisions and perhaps a premature initial launch forced significant design changes to be in order right away. it wasn't until last year's watchos 4 release that it finally felt like the waters had calmed. apple seemed to have solidified the brunt of its focus around fitness and audio, while also debuting a healthy backdrop of first-party apps, new watch faces, and machine learning features. the siri watch face was the big addition for both of those last two categories, and while its initial introduction was underwhelming, the ideas behind it were intriguing. the redesigned workout and music apps along with background audio during workouts were excellent additions to the apple watch's core foundation. all things considered, apple pushed a great update last year, and it only got better as the year progressed.while it didn't ship in time for watchos 4's launch in september, streaming from apple music was released late the next month in watchos 4.1. the ability to stream music in the background during workouts freed runners and other athletes from being tied to their phones while they exercised. paired with the redesigned workout app – which put live statistics front and center while keeping now playing and workout controls just a swipe away – watchos 4 established a truly better fitness experience for apple's smartwatch.the audio story that apple told last year felt much less complete. despite receiving a significant amoun...

extensive, nicely formatted guide for the new shortcuts app, published directly by apple today.if you're absolutely new to the shortcuts app and never played with workflow before, this is where i'd start. the guide goes into great detail about what shortcuts are, how you can organize them, and what types of input are supported in shortcuts. there's also an advanced section where – and i never thought i'd see this – apple explains x-callback-url and web apis. some of these sections have been adapted from the old workflow documentation, but it's a fantastic resource regardless. and once you're done reading through apple's materials, i'll be waiting here.

an oral history of apple’s former headquarters – macstories
steven levy spent more than a year talking to past and present apple executives and employees about the company’s former headquarters at one infinite loop in cupertino, california. as levy describes it: infinite loop was the place where apple’s leaders and engineers pulled off a historic turnaround, and it will always be the source of stories and legends—many of them untold. until now. it’s hard to pick among the anecdotes in levy’s history, but one of my favorites is this from phil schiller because it captures the tough choice that had to be made when steve jobs returned to apple and his empathy for customers: schiller: we’re like, “steve! newton customers are picketing! what do you want to do? they’re angry.” and steve said, “they have every right to be angry. they love newton. it’s a great product, and we have to kill it, and that’s not fun, so we have to get them coffee and doughnuts and send it down to them and tell them we love them and we’re sorry and we support them.” there are fascinating details about apple’s history in levy’s piece that you won’t find anywhere else, and he’s done an excellent job weaving them into a cohesive, chronological narrative that shouldn’t be missed.

pages, keynote, and numbers add siri shortcuts support and more – macstories
released today in version 4.2, apple's iwork suite of pages, keynote, and numbers now supports siri shortcuts in ios 12. additionally, each app scored a handful of new features and improvements, many of which are available across all three apps, while others are app-specific, such as animated drawings in pages and smart categories in numbers.shortcutsthe main way shortcuts have been adopted in iwork is for creating new documents from different templates. each of the existing templates across all three apps will provide their own shortcuts, so you can, for example, save a shortcut for creating a new note taking document in pages, formal presentation in keynote, or schedule spreadsheet in numbers.another helpful shortcut i've discovered enables playing a presentation from keynote. shortcuts are specific to different presentations, so after you've hit the play button on your 'ios 12 talk' presentation, you should see a shortcut suggestion in settings and the shortcuts app to play that same presentation again.apple unfortunately hasn't publicly documented the full list of supported shortcuts in iwork, so new document creation and presentation playback are the only types i've discovered so far. hopefully there are more out there that will be found with additional use of the updated apps, but for now the shortcuts support seems relatively light.everything elseaside from shortcuts, all three iwork apps benefit from the new ability to easily export drawings to photos, files, o...

streaks 4 adds ipad support, timed tasks, healthkit improvements, and siri shortcuts – macstories
there are a lot of habit trackers on ios, but streaks was one of the first and remains the gold standard against which i measure all other trackers. even as crunchy bagel has added new features and customization options, streaks’ simple, elegant design has remained at the center of its user experience. that’s important because habit tracking only works if it’s easy to log events. even the slightest friction makes it too easy to abandon your efforts.i’ve reviewed streaks 2 and last summer’s major 3.0 update before, so i won’t cover that ground again here. instead, i’ll focus on what’s new: an all-new ipad app, timed tasks, improved health tasks, and siri shortcuts.ipad app and syncstreaks sits at an interesting crossroads where health and fitness apps meet productivity apps. you might use the app to track whether you got eight hours of sleep, how many glasses of water you drank, or how many minutes you spent writing. no matter what habit you want to form, the key is to log it before you forget and move on to another activity. that made streaks a natural fit for the iphone and later the apple watch, both of which most people have with them all the time.with version 4 though, crunchy bagel has added ipad support with icloud sync. the best part of the new ipad version of streaks is that it works just like the iphone. your habits will show up in the same order in both apps and data syncs seamlessly and quickly. although i haven’t found myself logging events on my...

things 3.7 brings support for shortcuts, siri watch face, iphone landscape mode, and more – macstories
today cultured code launched the latest update to things, version 3.7, on ipad, iphone, and apple watch. the app's headline feature is full support for siri shortcuts, but it also brings welcome improvements in a few other areas: integration with the apple watch's siri face, landscape support on iphone which includes the iphone x, dynamic notifications, and more. taken together, it's a broad set of enhancements that takes full advantage of all the latest apis apple has to offer.shortcutsif there's a productivity app that could have possibly gotten by without immediate shortcuts support, it's things. my reasoning is that, even before shortcuts came along, things already had strong features in the areas of siri and automation that most other apps don't. last year things adopted sirikit intents to enable full siri support for task creation, list viewing, and more; it has also long had built-in actions in workflow, which are now carrying over to the shortcuts app. even if the team at cultured code hadn't written any new code this summer, things would have still included strong siri support and integration with the shortcuts app – what more could a user ask for?fortunately, i'm glad cultured code recognized that users can and do ask for a lot more, and they've answered that request. continuing its reputation for day one adoption of major os features, things includes a variety of shortcut options that put fine-grained automation tools in the hands of its users.as federic...

shortcuts and siri watch face support added to carrot weather – macstories
one of the big themes of apple's software releases this fall is the opening up of siri. with day one adoption of both siri shortcuts and siri face integration on the apple watch, carrot weather makes for a wonderful demonstration of how valuable this new, extended siri can be in all its various forms. finally, siri can provide weather data from sources besides the first-party app, both through the standard voice interface and, to my delight, on the siri watch face. and carrot weather takes great advantage of both new capabilities.often when an app receives immediate support for a significant new os feature, its implementation of that feature isn't as rich or extensive as updates that arrive later. with ipad drag and drop in last year's ios 11, for example, the note-taking app bear had early support but in a limited fashion; innovative drag and drop features like the drop bar didn't arrive until later. with carrot weather's shortcuts support, however, i can't imagine anything better than this release.there are a whopping 17 different kinds of shortcuts you can set up in carrot weather. the main ones are current weather, extended forecast, rain report, and interact, but an additional 13 exist for other data points like sunrise and sunset, wind speed, moon phase, and more. most are self-explanatory, but the interact shortcut is a fun addition from developer brian mueller – its simple purpose is to provide an avenue for siri and carrot to interact with each other, with yo...

tvos 12 is available today, the latest major software version for the apple tv. tvos releases are never as significant as those found on apple's other platforms, and that remains true this year; however, tvos 12 does include a handful of new features that have the potential to truly improve the apple tv experience on a daily basis. improvements include upgrades to aerial screensavers, dolby atmos support, an easier way to enter passwords, and more. let's dive in.screensaversin many ways, streaming boxes have a pretty simple job: they just need to deliver tv over the internet. whether someone's watching on an apple tv, chromecast, roku, or amazon fire tv, in most cases they really only care about whether their streaming box will give them reliable access to tv.that said, perks like awe-inspiring aerial screensavers make a noteworthy contribution to the tv watching experience. the apple tv's screensavers – silly as it may sound – are undoubtedly one of the best features of the product. and in tvos 12, they're getting better.the first way screensavers are better is that they finally will tell you the location where they were filmed. whenever a new screensaver appears, a line of text in the lower-left corner of the screen shares the screensaver's location before fading off-screen after a moment; at any time you can make this description reappear by tapping on the touch-sensitive portion of the siri remote. i can't count the number of times my wife or i have wondered ou...

overcast, marco arment's popular podcast client for iphone and ipad, received a major update today to version 5. while i've long praised apple's work on their built-in podcasts app for ios – particularly since getting three homepods and leveraging podcasts' support for airplay 2 – i also recognize the appeal of overcast's advanced features and powerful audio effects. sprinkled throughout overcast's release history are design details and enhancements big and small that make it a sophisticated, versatile client for podcast aficionados who don't want to settle for a stock app. from this standpoint, despite welcome improvements to podcasts in ios 12, changes in overcast 5 make it an even more attractive option that has caused me second-guess my decision to embrace apple's native app.redesigned now playingthe most notable difference between the old overcast and the updated version is the redesigned now playing screen. page indicators and hidden gestures to navigate show notes and chapters are gone, replaced by a carousel of swipable cards containing effects, podcast artwork, show notes, and chapters (if available).left: overcast 4. right: overcast 5.these multiple pages – which are somewhat reminiscent of apple's old control center design for ios 10 – are clearly indicated in the interface with pulling controls that are consistent with the iphone x's home indicator and the ipad's split view. each page acts as a self-contained entity that can be scrolled (in the ...

1password extends into the ios quicktype keyboard with password autofill – macstories
this year's wwdc must have been a wild roller coaster ride for 1password's developers, agile bits. anxieties were surely at a high as apple shared news of icloud keychain's expanded capabilities in ios 12 – the system now offers seamless new password creation, security code autofill, and more. those segments seemed to signal apple's intent to make third-party apps like 1password unnecessary for most users. yet not long after apple's keychain announcements, a new api was discovered that told an entirely different story. as i wrote in my ios 12 overview earlier this summer: one advantage apple's own icloud keychain has had over third-party password managers like 1password is that it can populate relevant account info inside the quicktype keyboard. that level of convenience is hard to beat, no matter how much more full-featured third-party apps may be. fortunately, in ios 12 a new password manager api will enable the same type of feature to be adopted by third parties. the team at agile bits wasted no time getting to work implementing this password manager api, and it's launching today in 1password alongside ios 12.autofill is a keyboard feature that's grown increasingly more powerful each year. as a result, this past year i began moving away from using 1password as often, and instead relied on icloud keychain for most of my login needs. though 1password's action extension has always been a great way to access account info, it takes several taps and doesn't wo...

the macstories review – macstories
we left last year's ios 11 update with a palpable tension between two platforms.on one hand, following a year of minor changes to the ipad and a hardware refresh that came in later than some expected, apple once again devoted plenty of attention to reimagining the tablet's role in the world of modern computing. ipad updates in ios 11, despite having their fair share of critics, largely did not disappoint. on the other hand, the iphone – by and large still apple's crown jewel – had to play second fiddle to a platform that was more in need of a strong, coherent message. and so despite blessing the iphone with the same features of its larger multitouch cousin (at least most of them), apple seemed content ceding the smartphone's spotlight to the ipad. there was a healthy array of new functionalities for both, but ios 11's `monumental leap for ipad` tagline pretty much told the whole story.ios 12, available today for the same range of devices that supported ios 11, feels like a reaction to changes that have occurred around apple and consumer technology over the past year.while ios 11 may go down in apple software history as the touchstone of the ipad's maturity, it will also be remembered as one of the company's most taxing releases for its users. you don't have to look far into the ios 11 cycle for headlines lamenting its poor stability on older hardware, plethora of design inconsistencies (which were noted time and time again), and general sense of sluggishness –...

it's a big week ahead for apple fans, with the company launching the next major versions of ios, watchos, and more later today, plus the arrival of the iphone xs/xs max and apple watch series 4 in a few days time. it's also a big week for macstories, with coverage planned for many exciting app updates and the publishing of federico's ios 12 review.over the last few years, federico's annual ios review has grown into the center-point of our september apple coverage, and as such we always enjoy providing a variety of extras to accompany the review. here's what we have in store for this year.audiobook2017 marked the first time we offered an audiobook version of the ios review, and that option was so well received that we're happy to report the debut of this year's ios 12 review audiobook. narrated once again by myke hurley, the co-founder of relay fm, the audiobook is a fantastic way to experience the review, whether as a supplement to federico's written words or a replacement for them entirely.when it comes to listening to the audiobook, as well as the exclusive episode of appstories unplugged i'll detail shortly, there are several options available on the app store. the podcast client castro recently added a sideloading feature which makes it extremely easy for castro plus subscribers to add external mp3 files to the app, then benefit from features like chapter navigation; overcast offers a similar feature to premium members via its web uploader. another app option i'...

streaks 4 adds ipad support, timed tasks, healthkit improvements, and siri shortcuts – macstories
there are a lot of habit trackers on ios, but streaks was one of the first and remains the gold standard against which i measure all other trackers. even as crunchy bagel has added new features and customization options, streaks’ simple, elegant design has remained at the center of its user experience. that’s important because habit tracking only works if it’s easy to log events. even the slightest friction makes it too easy to abandon your efforts.i’ve reviewed streaks 2 and last summer’s major 3.0 update before, so i won’t cover that ground again here. instead, i’ll focus on what’s new: an all-new ipad app, timed tasks, improved health tasks, and siri shortcuts.ipad app and syncstreaks sits at an interesting crossroads where health and fitness apps meet productivity apps. you might use the app to track whether you got eight hours of sleep, how many glasses of water you drank, or how many minutes you spent writing. no matter what habit you want to form, the key is to log it before you forget and move on to another activity. that made streaks a natural fit for the iphone and later the apple watch, both of which most people have with them all the time.with version 4 though, crunchy bagel has added ipad support with icloud sync. the best part of the new ipad version of streaks is that it works just like the iphone. your habits will show up in the same order in both apps and data syncs seamlessly and quickly. although i haven’t found myself logging events on my...

text case adds siri shortcut support for text transformations – macstories
not long ago, i reviewed an update to a new text transformation utility for ios by chris hannah called text case. that update added support for title casing text according to popular style guides including the chicago manual of style that we use here at macstories. the app can do 13 other text transformations too like url encoding and decoding, all caps, sentence capitalization, and many more.i have the title casing rules of the style guide internalized for the most part, but every now and i want to check on a headline to be sure. in the past, i used an online service, which works well, but switching to a browser is an interruption. it’s a small interruption, but it’s one that may lead me to check another open tab or do something else that distracts me from completing an article. when i’m writing, i’d rather stay immersed in my text editor.with text case’s extension, i can run a headline conversion right inside my text editor from the share sheet that’s accessible from the contextual popup menu that appears when you select text. with version 1.3 out today, hannah takes the app a step further by adding siri shortcut support too.tap the settings button at the top of the main view. the ‘add to siri’ section of settings lists each of the fourteen different text conversions the app can perform. tapping any of them opens an ‘add to siri’ view where you can record a custom command to invoke the app’s text conversion via siri.using text case with siri and embedd...

pcalc 3.8 adds support for ios 12’s siri shortcuts, including powerful clipboard commands – macstories
pcalc, james thomson's advanced calculator for iphone and ipad, has been updated this week to version 3.8. i've been testing pcalc 3.8 for the past couple of months on my devices running ios 12, and it features one of the best implementations of siri shortcuts i've seen from a third-party developer yet. even more than the app's excellent widget, shortcuts have enabled me to integrate pcalc features into different aspects of my daily workflow, including conversations with siri via my homepods.as i will detail in my upcoming ios 12 review (and as i explained in a story back in june), there are two types of system shortcuts apps can donate to ios 12. basic `activity` shortcuts (based on the existing user activity framework) can launch apps into specific screens or activate specific features; more advanced app shortcuts (based on custom sirikit intents) can perform native actions in the background without launching the app at all. in ios 12, both types of shortcuts are available from search, the lock screen, and the shortcuts app; they can also be assigned a custom voice phrase to be triggered from siri.pcalc 3.8 supports both styles of shortcuts in ios 12, and the way thomson implemented creation and assignment of shortcuts from within pcalc should be a template for other developers to follow.as you start using pcalc 3.8, operations you recently performed in the app will be suggested in settings ⇾ siri & search ⇾ all shortcuts; you will also be able to search for pcalc...
