ifixit tests macbook pro’s keyboard membrane – macstories
ifixit ran more tests and took a closer look at the keyboard membrane that was added to the 2018 macbook pro released last week. it turns out, the membrane is one sheet of die-cut silicone with tiny cutouts to allow keycaps to connect to the butterfly switches beneath.to test how well the new design holds up against dust, ifixit sprayed a new macbook pro with a dusting of paint additive. they then tore apart the notebook and found: lo and behold, the dust is safely sequestered at the edges of the membrane, leaving the mechanism fairly sheltered. the holes in the membrane allow the keycap clips to pass through, but are covered by the cap itself, blocking dust ingress. the previous-gen butterfly keys are far less protected, and are almost immediately flooded with our glowing granules. on the 2018 keyboard, with the addition of more particulate and some aggressive typing, the dust eventually penetrates under the sheltered clips, and gets on top of the switch—so the ingress-proofing isn’t foolproof just yet. time will tell how long the barrier will hold up. ifixit followed up by testing with grittier sand, which managed to cause keys to stick.it’s good to see that the macbook pro’s keyboard withstands fine particles better than earlier models in testing. the real test, of course, is long-term human testing. only time will tell whether the 2018 macbook pros can hold up when faced with a crumbly muffin in your local café or the pollen blowing across your keyboard as...

tom gruber, co-founder of siri, retires from apple – macstories
the information reports that tom gruber, apple’s head of the siri advanced developments group, has retired to pursue personal interests including photography and ocean conservation. gruber joined apple as part of the company’s acquisition of siri in 2010 along with his co-founders dag kittlaus and adam cheyer, who previously left apple in 2011 and 2012 respectively. in addition to gruber, the information reports that vipul ved prakash, apple’s head of search, has left the company. apple confirmed both departures to the information.siri, which apple incorporated into ios in 2011, has been through recent leadership changes as it has fallen behind voice assistants like amazon’s alexa and google assistant. in 2017, craig federighi, apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, took over siri’s oversight from eddy cue. just this past may, apple hired john giannandrea, google's former chief of search and artificial intelligence to be apple’s chief of machine learning and ai strategy. last week, giannandrea showed up on the leadership page on apple.com, and, according to a techcrunch story, the siri team now reports to him.with all of siri’s co-founders departed from the company, it will be interesting to see in what direction giannandrea and the siri team take apple’s voice assistant.

doppler enables pain-free importing of music and podcasts from safari on ios – macstories
i've been an ios-first user for nearly three years now, and during that time there have been very few tasks that required me to pull out my old macbook air. one remaining holdout has been downloading music or podcast files from the web and saving them somewhere i can conveniently access them on ios. the ideal scenario would enable importing those files into itunes, where they get added to my icloud music library – unfortunately, that remains impossible on ios today. but the next-best option i've discovered can be found in an iphone app called doppler.doppler launched a few months ago as a music app aimed at the non-streaming market. despite the increasing popularity of services like apple music and spotify, there are still plenty of users who want greater ownership of their music library, and that's where doppler comes in. it specializes in offline playback and custom library curation. you can import your existing itunes purchases, or import songs or podcasts saved in the files app, and customize metadata so your library's organized exactly as you like it.today in version 1.2, doppler adds a feature i've long wanted on ios: the ability to import files directly from safari.my main use cases for doppler's new feature include downloading mp3 tracks from an artist i support on patreon, and downloading special members-only podcasts, like appstories unplugged from club macstories. in both cases, getting the audio files from safari into a music player, or even just a cloud s...

fantastical 2.5 for mac adds time change proposals, meetup.com support, and more – macstories
flexibits has released an update to the mac version of its popular calendar app fantastical. the feature that should be useful to most users immediately is the ability to send and receive new time proposals for events. fantastical already could send meeting invitations and acceptances, but with version 2.5, recipients of an invitation can propose a new time. the feature works with icloud, google, exchange and caldav calendaring services, which should cover most use cases.when you receive an invitation and want to propose a new time, double-click the event. in the popup, you’ll see ‘propose new time’ beneath the event’s participants. clicking that expands the section to allow you to pick new start and end times. to send the proposal, click the ‘propose’ button to open a pre-filled form email in apple mail that will be sent to the event’s participants taking much of the data input out of the process of proposing new times.proposing a new event time generates an email to the event's participants automatically.fantastical now also supports meetup.com. from the accounts tab in preferences, you can log into your meetup account. services like meetup usually make ical files available that you can add to your calendar, but with fantastical integration everything is automatic. in my testing, calendar events for meetup events showed up in fantastical within seconds of setting them up on meetup.com. i’d love to see fantastical expand this feature to incorporate other pop...

sharecuts – macstories
fun new project by ios developer extraordinaire guilherme rambo – sharecuts is a (so far, beta and invitation-only) directory to browse and install custom shortcuts created by other users. sarah perez has more details at techcrunch: but by the time ios 12 releases to the public later this fall, sharecuts’ directory will be filled out and a lot more functional. the premise, explains sharecuts’ creator guilherme rambo, was to make an easily accessible place where people could share their shortcuts with one another, discover those others have shared, and suggest improvements to existing shortcuts. “i was talking to a friend [patrick balestra] about how cool shortcuts are, and how it should be easier for people to share and discover shortcuts,” says guilherme. “he mentioned he wanted to build a website for that – he even had the idea for the name sharecuts – but he was on vacation without a good internet connection so i decided to just build it myself in one day,” he says. the site is currently a bare bones, black-and-white page with cards for each shortcut, but an update will bring a more colorful style (see below) and features that will allow users to filter the shortcuts by tags, vote on favorites, among other things. this isn't the first time users have tried to launch curated directories for workflows (there were a bunch for the old workflow app), but i think projects like this are going to be especially important given the lack of an official publi...

microsoft releases cross-platform skype update and announces call recording and other features – macstories
microsoft has released version 8 of skype for the desktop, which features a redesign inspired by the app’s mobile clients. the update, which is available on mac, windows, and linux, replaces version 7, which will no longer work after september 1, 2018.the update includes 1080p video calls with screen sharing for up to 24 participants. twitter-style ‘@mentions’ have been added too. mentioning someone by name preceded by the ‘@‘ symbol sends them a notification. microsoft has also added a media gallery. clicking on ‘gallery’ in a conversation opens a panel on the right side of the skype window with links, files, and other media that has been shared. finally, users can share files, photos, and videos of up to 300 mb by dragging them into a conversation.microsoft also updated skype’s ios apps. the update to the ipad version of skype is noteworthy because it’s been about a year since it was last updated, and it now includes features that are in line with the more frequently updated iphone version.microsoft says it has other features planned for later this summer too. skype will add read receipts that display avatars beneath the most recent message a user has read, so you can see at a glance where each participant in a conversation is. end-to-end encrypted audio calls and text messaging with file attachments based on the signal protocol is coming later too.perhaps the most significant new feature that skype will introduce is cloud-based call recording that works w...

after two years with pinterest, instapaper regains its independence – macstories
from instapaper's blog: today, we’re announcing that pinterest has entered into an agreement to transfer ownership of instapaper to instant paper, inc., a new company owned and operated by the same people who’ve been working on instapaper since it was sold to betaworks by marco arment in 2013. the ownership transfer will occur after a 21 day waiting period designed to give our users fair notice about the change of control with respect to their personal information. we want to emphasize that not much is changing for the instapaper product outside the new ownership. the product will continue to be built and maintained by the same people who’ve been working on instapaper for the past five years. we plan to continue offering a robust service that focuses on readers and the reading experience for the foreseeable future. following pinterest's acquisition of instapaper almost two years ago, there was a reasonable level of concern about what that change would mean for the popular read-it-later service. from an outside perspective, however, it seems like the transition has gone smoothly – which makes today's announcement all the more surprising.it will be interesting to see what changes this move brings in the short-term. in the immediate future, the company has already confirmed it's working hard on making instapaper available in europe again. looking further out, the service's business model is a big question mark. before pinterest came along, instapaper offered ...

ios 12 ar quick look demos – macstories
i recently came across a demo of ar quick look, an ios 12 feature that allows apps to present 3d and ar previews for objects built using the new usdz file format. shopify, the popular e-commerce platform, is going to take advantage of ar quick look to let customers preview items in their surroundings directly from safari, contextually to the shopping experience.here's daniel beauchamp, writing on the shopify ar/vr blog: for the past three years, shopify has been exploring how ar / vr will change the way consumers shop. last year, we showed how apple’s arkit could be used to provide compelling ar commerce experiences. the main complexity was that arkit needed to be run in an app. this meant that shopify merchants looking to offer these experiences had to have their own unique mobile apps that customers would need to download. with ios 12’s ar quick look, 3d models of products in the usdz file format can be uploaded directly to online shopify stores and viewed in ar right within safari, without needing to download a separate app. his video gives you an even better idea of the integration possible between safari, arkit, and apple pay in ios 12:beauchamp argues that `the web is how ar becomes mainstream` – looking at these demos, it's hard to disagree. not having to install a dedicated arkit app for every single online store we use and actually having the ability to share and preview models from safari or messages is going to remove a ton of friction from the cur...

personal app store stories from the macstories team – macstories
over the past week we've released articles and podcast episodes documenting the stories of apple and third-party developers during the app store's decade of life, but as our celebration week nears its end, we wanted to shift gears and share our own stories.the story of the app store doesn't just belong to apple, nor is it limited to the developers who have made the app store such a vibrant marketplace. everyone who has ever downloaded an app on their iphone, ipad, or even ipod touch has their own story of the app store's impact on their life. in that vein, here are the macstories team's personal stories of what the store and its products have meant to us.federicoi told the story of how macstories came to be before. after dropping out of university (where i thought i was going to study philosophy – it's funny to imagine another timeline where i ended up a philosophy professor), i got a full-time job as a seller at a physical ebay store. those stores, which were quite common before the smartphone era and the mobile-marketplace app boom, helped folks who didn't know how or didn't have the patience to sell old items on ebay. my job consisted of assisting customers who came into the store with boxes full of stuff, explaining to them how ebay and our fees worked, putting items up for sale, monitoring the auction, and taking care of shipments. it was a fun job, but it was also repetitive and somewhat boring after a while, yet it allowed me to save money toward the first co...

the next decade – macstories
the app store has changed the world. over the last decade society as we know it has been irrevocably shaped by the app store and its products.just as no one 10 years ago could have predicted where the app store would have brought us today, so is it impossible to guess what the next decade might bring. there's no stopping us from trying though.as we close out our app store anniversary week coverage, here are our hopes and expectations for the next 10 years.apple predictions often age badly because the company has a tendency to not directly follow the latest market trends; at the very least, they offer their unique twist on ideas others have been experimenting with for some time. however, based on how the app store has evolved for the past 10 years, i see some interesting signs in its trajectory that are pointing to obvious changes coming down the road. so, even though i may turn out to be dramatically wrong in 10 years, here's my list of app store changes i believe will occur over the course of the next decade.apple gets serious about ar with a dedicated product and app store. this is the obvious one. i'm convinced that the arkit framework we have today is but a way for apple to test the waters for a real, standalone augmented reality device. the rapid pace of improvements and growth of the arkit developer apis seems to indicate that apple wants to listen to developers and gather feedback at scale before they're ready to commit to a dedicated ar product, which i think will...

saving the app store’s history – macstories
the app store had just turned one when, sometime in the summer of 2009, concept artist and game developer zach gage published a preview video for an iphone game he had been working on. the game was based on a simple premise: gage's girlfriend liked playing tetris for iphone, which he thought was a rushed adaptation of the console game that didn't take advantage of the iphone's unique hardware. `i just looked at it`, gage told me in an interview on our podcast appstories, `and i thought – i can make a better game than this`. so, in his spare time between different projects, he got to work.the game, which launched in fall 2009, was called unify. on his website, gage described it as `touch-tetris for both sides of the brain`. in unify you can see traits that would define gage's later work on the app store: the game takes a well-known concept and adds a twist to it – blocks come in from both sides of the screen rather than falling from the top as in classic tetris. graphics are minimal, but instantly recognizable and somewhat cute in their simplicity. unify is entirely controlled via touch, eschewing any kind of console-like onscreen controls. `i was trying to imagine what tetris would look like as a game designed for multitouch`, gage added. `and that kind of got me hooked. after that, i just kept making games`.unify has all the elements for an ideal app store origin story: a basic preview video uploaded to vimeo 9 years ago, before youtube became the de-facto ...

the appstories interview series – macstories
as federico explained yesterday, we knew from the earliest planning stages of our coverage of the app store’s 10th anniversary that we wanted to include interviews with the developers and designers of apps and games we love. we do interviews periodically on appstories and knew it would be the perfect way to let the people whose lives have been affected by the app store tell their stories in their own words. over the course of this week, we will post one episode of appstories each day featuring interviews on a wide variety of topics that complement the in-depth stories you can read here on macstories.if you haven’t subscribed to appstories yet, you can do so with the links at the bottom of this post or listen here in your browser using the embedded players below. as new episodes are published this week, we will update this post with the latest interviews.i hope you enjoy these conversations as much as we did recording them.sponsored by:we are joined today by independent game developer zach gage the creator of hit games like ridiculous fishing, spelltower, really bad chess, typeshift, flipflop solitaire, and pocket run pool to discuss the app store’s effect on gaming.an interview with becky hansmeyer, the creator of snapthread, and heidi helen pilypas, the designer of stamp pack and the upcoming capsicum.we interview marco arment, the creator of instapaper and overcast, and david smith, who has many apps including health and fitness apps such as pedometer++, workouts++, a...

adobe acknowledges working on a full version of photoshop for the ipad – macstories
bloomberg reports that its sources say that adobe is working on full versions of its desktop photoshop app and other creative cloud apps for the ipad. although adobe has not committed to the october unveiling and 2019 ship date also cited by bloomberg’s sources, its chief product officer, scott belsky did acknowledge that the company is working on a new cross-platform version of photoshop and other apps. bloomberg’s sources say illustrator is one of the other apps being developed for the ipad, which they say will be released sometime after photoshop.belsky, noting that newer versions of apple’s ipad pro line are now capable of running photoshop, told bloomberg: “my aspiration is to get these on the market as soon as possible,” belsky said in an interview. “there’s a lot required to take a product as sophisticated and powerful as photoshop and make that work on a modern device like the ipad. we need to bring our products into this cloud-first collaborative era.” the addition of photoshop and other creative suite apps to the ipad would be a significant step forward for the tablet’s push into the pro user market. currently, only microsoft’s surface line of tablets is capable of running a fully-functional version of adobe’s pro apps, making it the default choice for creative professionals who want to use creative suite on a tablet.

10 years of app store controversies – macstories
the app store is a wildly successful product. in 2017 alone it brought apple somewhere in the range of $11.4 billion, and app developers pocketed $26.5 billion – an increase of 30% over 2016. to kick off 2018, new year's day alone yielded $300 million of app store purchases. with ever-more apple devices in the world, the rest of 2018 is sure to end up in the record books.when the app store first launched in 2008, it was an unproven concept in the software market. historically when you wanted to download software for your computer, you would usually visit the developer's website, which handled both the payment and actual download. while it could be argued that smartphones at that time weren't proper `computers,` the computer designation undoubtedly fit the iphone. with its powerful operating system built on mac os x, the expectation from many developers was that, eventually at least, the device would gain access to native third-party apps through traditional means. instead, the iphone – and subsequently, the ipad – has remained a closed platform. and for 10 years now, the app store has been that platform's sole gatekeeper.apple's vision for the app store has always been driven by privacy and security. rather than sending users out to a host of unvetted websites to find software that may or may not be what it claims, the app store was a single unified market for approved, malware-free software to live. as a user, you could download any app in the confidence that it...

how the iphone and app store have redefined accessible software – macstories
everyone acknowledges the societal and technological effects the iphone has had on the world. in late 2007, time named the original model its `invention of the year,` and rightfully proclaimed it `the phone that changed phones forever.` eleven years on, it is genuinely difficult to remember the world before the iphone existed. whatever your platform allegiance, there can be no disputing that the first iphone pioneered the notion that everyone should carry a touchscreen supercomputer with them wherever they go. in hindsight, steve jobs wasn’t exaggerating when he boasted apple would reinvent the phone.yet for everything the iphone has meant to smartphones and to the world, there is a segment of users for which the iphone has been truly revolutionary: disabled people. for many people with disabilities, myself included, the iphone was the first accessible smartphone. the device’s multitouch user interface and large (for the time) display represented a total break from the smartphone conventions of the day. an unheralded ramification of this was how accessible these features made the iphone. for example, the soft keyboard allowed users to compose text messages and emails without struggling with the t9 keyboards that were commonplace at the time. likewise, the iphone’s 3.5-inch display was considered large for the day, which made seeing content markedly easier than on the postage stamp-sized displays that dominated cell phones then. it’s a testament to the original iph...
