hackers target real estate deals, with devastating impact
september 23, 2018 by rob lever real estate agents and others involved in home transactions have become increasing targets for hackersjames and candace butcher were ready to finalize the purchase of their dream retirement home, and at closing time wired $272,000 from their bank following instructions they received by email. within hours, the money had vanished.unbeknownst to the colorado couple, the email account for the real estate settlement company had been hacked, and fraudsters had altered the wiring instruction to make off with the hefty sum representing a big chunk of the butchers' life savings, according to a lawsuit filed in state court.a report by the fbi's internet crime complaint center said the number of victims of email fraud involving real estate transactions rose 1,110 percent between 2015 to 2017 and losses rose nearly 2,200 percent.nearly 10,000 people reported being victims of this kind of fraud in 2017 with losses over $56 million, the fbi report said.the butchers, forced to move into their son's basement instead of their dream home, eventually reached a confidential settlement in a lawsuit against their real estate agent, bank and settlement company, according to their lawyer ian hicks.the problem is growing as hackers take advantage of lax security in the chain of businesses involved in real estate and a potential for a large payoff.`in these cases, the fraudster knows all of the particulars of the transaction, things that are completely conf...

late to the party, german carmakers join race against tesla
september 23, 2018 by yann schreiber german carmakers are going after teslaafter years watching tesla's electric cars speed ahead while they have been on the defensive over an industry-wide diesel emissions scandal, german high-end manufacturers have finally unveiled their first challengers to the californian upstart. mercedes-benz maker daimler, bmw and volkswagen's audi and porsche subsidiaries between them control some 80 percent of the worldwide premium car market.but until recently they offered little battery-powered, zero-emission competition to tesla and its bombastic chief executive elon musk.that changed this month, with all three groups unveiling their first all-electric suvs slated for release over the next two years.audi rolled out its `e-tron`, bmw its `inext` and mercedes its `eqc`, while porsche presented an electric coupe, the `mission e`.in total, german carmakers have vowed a total of almost 40 billion euros ($46.7 billion) of investment in battery-powered vehicles in the coming three years, industry association vda says.with a market share of around eight percent in germany—compared with tesla's 0.1 percent—audi hopes electric cars will account for around one in three sales by 2025.`finally, it's getting started!` auto industry expert ferdinand dudenhoeffer told afp.time is pressing, as sales of engines powered by automakers' longtime growth driver diesel have plummeted in the face of plans by many large cities to ban them to brin...

australia kills four sharks after tourist attacks
september 23, 2018 shark attacks are rare, but still cause fear among ocean-usersfour large sharks have been killed in australia after a woman and a 12-year-old girl were attacked at a popular great barrier reef tourist spot. both were still in hospital sunday after being mauled in separate incidents just a day apart last week at the whitsunday islands.drum lines, which use baited hooks to catch the predators, ensnared four tiger sharks, one 3.7 metres (12 feet) long and the others each between two to three metres, a fisheries queensland spokesman said sunday.`while sharks of this size are potentially very dangerous to humans, it is unclear if they were responsible for injuries caused to two swimmers,` he said.the latest shark to be caught `has been humanely euthanised and will be taken further out to sea for disposal.`the spokesman said it was clear `there are a significant number of active sharks in local waters and people are urged not to swim`.the drumlines were to remain in place over the next week.shark attacks are very rare in the whitsundays—a collection of spectacular tropical islands at the heart of the barrier reef—with the last encounter reported to be eight years ago, according to national broadcaster abc.the attacks have revived debate about how best to reduce the risk of encounters between sharks and the growing number of people using the ocean for leisure.many conservationists and marine scientists object to killing sharks, and insist that dr...

ivory coast looks to solar vehicles to replace bush taxis
september 23, 2018 by christophe koffi local politicians are putting great faith in chinese-made tricycle taxis with rechargable solar energy panels which have been plying routes in jacqueville, a coastal town outside abidjanhi-tech, cheap—and quiet. the ivorian resort of jacqueville just outside abidjan is betting on solar-powered three-wheelers as it looks to replace traditional but noisy and dirty bush taxis. `it's cheaper and relaxing!` says local trader sandrine tetelo, of the chinese-made `saloni` or `antara` tricycles, which could eventually spell the end for old-school `woro-woro` four-wheelers as jacqueville looks to make itself ivory coast's premier eco city.the mini-cars, 2.7 metres (8.8 feet) long and two metres high, are covered in solar panels each fitted out with six 12-volt batteries, giving the vehicles a range of 140 kilometres (87 miles).returning from a visit to china, the solar cars' promotor marc togbe pitched his plan to mayor joachim beugre, who was immediately sold.`we are used to seeing (typically old and beaten up) bush taxis pollute the atmosphere and the environment. we said to ourselves, if we could only replace them by solar trikes,` said beugre.solar pioneers?`the adventure started in january with two little cars,` added togbe, who has created a partnership with local businessman balla konate.`i went to china with a friend,` says konate, `and afterwards i sent four youngsters to lome for training with a friend who ha...

trump weighs draft order targeting google, facebook: reports
september 23, 2018 us president donald trump has stepped up his attacks on social media platforms for what he sees as `bias` against himpresident donald trump is weighing an executive order that would open federal antitrust and criminal probes into google, facebook and other social media firms, us media said saturday, though the white house promptly distanced itself from the reports. last month, trump stepped up his attacks on big tech companies, warning them to be `careful,` and slamming what he called `rigged` internet search results.the us president had complained that google searches for `trump news` brought up mostly negative stories about him.google strongly rejected any bias claims.the white house's draft executive order focuses on alleged `bias` at the companies.`executive departments and agencies with authorities that could be used to enhance competition among online platforms (agencies) shall... use those authorities to promote competition and ensure that no online platform exercises market power in a way that harms consumers, including through the exercise of bias,` read a draft of the report circulated by us media.`not later than 30 days from the date of this order, agencies shall submit to the director of the national economic council an initial list of (1) actions each agency can potentially take to protect competition among online platforms and address online platform bias.`the text also demands that federal agencies investigation any pot...

france reverses car tyre sea sanctuary—an environmental flop
september 23, 2018 by vincent-xavier morvan divers and a specially equipped boat with lifting gear have been fishing out hundreds of the old rubber tyres 500 metres (1,600 feet) from an exclusive coastline between the french resorts of cannes and antibeswhat seemed a like a crazy idea turned out to be just that: a 1980s experiment that saw 25,000 car tyres dumped into the crystal-clear waters of the mediterranean to create a sanctuary for sealife off the french coast is being cleaned up after it was found to be polluting. since the start of last week, divers and a specially equipped boat with lifting gear have been fishing out hundreds of the old loops of rubber about 500 metres (1,600 feet) from an exclusive coastline between the towns of cannes and antibes.the original vision, backed by local french authorities at the time and fishermen, was that the tyres would become populated by coral and other sea creatures in a conservation area where fishing was off limits.in france, the idea of a `tyre reef` was tried only here, but a local academic working on the clean-up operation said authorities in other countries, particularly the united states, had tried the same failed idea.`we hoped (back in the 1980s) that we could restore aquatic life there, but it didn't work,` the deputy mayor of antibes, eric duplay told afp. `it turns out that the tyre reef was not a prolific place for biomass.`denis genovese, the head of an association of local fishermen, confirmed that ...

ocean acidification may reduce sea scallop fisheries
each year, fishermen harvest more than $500 million worth of atlantic sea scallops from the waters off the east coast of the united states. a new model created by scientists at the woods hole oceanographic institution (whoi), however, predicts that those fisheries may potentially be in danger. as levels of carbon dioxide increase in the earth's atmosphere, the upper oceans become increasingly acidic—a condition that could reduce the sea scallop population by more than 50% in the next 30 to 80 years, under a worst-case scenario. strong fisheries management and efforts to reduce co2 emissions, however, might slow or even stop that trend.

japan space robots start asteroid survey
september 22, 2018 the rovers will jump around on the surface—soaring as high as 15 metres and staying in the air for as long as 15 minutesa pair of robot rovers have landed on an asteroid and begun a survey, japan's space agency said saturday, as it conducts a mission aiming to shed light on the origins of the solar system. the rover mission marks the world's first moving, robotic observation of an asteroid surface, according to the japan aerospace exploration agency (jaxa).the round, cookie tin-shaped robots successfully reached the ryugu asteroid a day after they were released from the hayabusa2 probe, the agency said.`each of the rovers is operating normally and has started surveying ryugu's surface,` jaxa said in a statement. taking advantage of the asteroid's low gravity, the rovers will jump around on the surface—soaring as high as 15 metres (49 feet) and staying in the air for as long as 15 minutes—to survey the asteroid's physical features.`i am so proud that we have established a new method of space exploration for small celestial bodies,` said jaxa project manager yuichi tsuda.the agency tried but failed in 2005 to land a rover on another asteroid in a similar mission.hayabusa2 will next month deploy an `impactor` that will explode above the asteroid, shooting a two-kilo (four-pound) copper object to blast a small crater into the surface.from this crater, the probe will collect `fresh` materials unexposed to millennia of wind and radiatio...

first to red planet will become martians: canada astronaut
september 22, 2018 canadian astronaut chris hadfield—made famous for his rendition of the david bowie song `space oddity` while aboard the international space station—strums his guitar on the iss in this 2012 nasa photoastronauts traveling through space on the long trip to mars will not have the usual backup from mission control on earth and will need to think of themselves as martians to survive, canada's most famous spaceman half-jokingly said friday. current predictions are that humans will reach mars—up to 400 million kilometers (250 million miles) from earth—in the coming decades. but the vast distance means communications with mission control would be delayed by up to 22 minutes.as a result, astronauts would need to be self-reliant on the voyage, which clocks in at 2.5 years round trip in travel time alone.`if i were commander of that crew as soon as the earth started fading in the rearview mirror, i would get the crew together and say: 'we are no longer earthlings, we are now martians. that's who we are. we need to redefine our relationship with the planet that birthed us,'` former astronaut chris hadfield said.`it's going to be very difficult not having mother earth next to you and it's going to be really important for that crew to define who they are as the most distant explorers in human history,` he said.hadfield, whose 2013 rendition of david bowie's `space oddity` aboard the international space station was watched by millions, was t...

titanic battle for sky culminates in auction
september 22, 2018 welcome to a rare auctiona titanic takeover battle for european tv operator sky between rupert murdoch's 21st century fox and us cable giant comcast culminates saturday in a rare blind auction. sky's subscription base of 23 million and rights to english premier league football make it one of europe's most profitable and powerful tv companies.the auction pits two traditional us media behemoths who are seeking content to keep viewers from switching to streaming services such as netflix.comcast's latest offer values sky at £26 billion ($34 billion, 29 billion euros).fox has boosted its own bid to £24.5 billion and saturday will decide who finishes with the highest offer in a complex process being held away from the public eye.the showdown will help determine whether australian-born us citizen murdoch succeeds in acquiring the 61 percent stake in sky he does not already have but has long sought.the two-year saga is also reshaping the us media-entertainment world landscape by allowing walt disney co. to complete its mega-merger with fox.saturday's auction has thus turned into a proxy battle between comcast and disney for sky.comcast's holdings already include universal studios and the us television channels nbc and cnbc.disney's empire stretches from its film studio and theme parks to the us television network nbc and the various espn sport channels.critics argue that allowing murdoch—who owns major british newspaper titles the times and the s...
