You assign a sexy female voice to the PDA and give it access to all of your emails, social media accounts, calendar, photo album, contacts, and other bits and flotsam of your digital life. She—for that’s how you quickly think of her—knows you better than your mother, your soon-to-be ex-wife, your friends, or your therapist. this is the machine that could allow apple to ‘monopolize’ future iphone repairs

As Apple continues to fight “right to repair” legislation, Motherboard today posted an image of the proprietary machine that allows the company to “monopolize” certain types of repairs. Referred to as the “iPhone Calibration Machine,” it’s located in the back of every Apple Store and is integral to the company’s repair process…Mujjo Wallet iPhone 7 CaseA former Apple Genius explained how the machine works to Motherboard, with the central point being that the machine is “not very Apple-like” in any way. Apple first started using this machine following the release of the iPhone 5S, which is when Touch ID was first introduced.“It was a big clunky machine that honestly looked like someone built it in their backyard. There were different ‘moulds’ that different iPhone models would go into befor

workplace diversity will soon include artificial intelligence

Dr Micheal Harre is thinking through how the AI future will work. Credit: University of SydneyA tsunami of change is already arriving. Artificial intelligence is now capable of doing desk jobs that were previously safe from automation. The social and economic effects remain to be seen, but is AI what we think it is?
Workplaces that include artificial intelligence (AI) will soon be reality, say researchers who believe the rise of AI in all areas of life is not only inevitable, it's set to reshape the way we think about consciousness and human identity. From Metropolis to 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Terminator, robots and super-intelligent AIs in film have seduced and terrified our collective consciousness, having an impact on how we view artificial intelligence. But will they really crus

criss angel blames poor eating & sleeping for las vegas mishap

Criss Angel is blaming a poor diet and lack of sleep for an onstage mishap that sent him to a hospital. The 49-year-old magician was attempting a trick at his Las Vegas show Friday where he tries to escape from a straitjacket while hanging upside down. the goal of a new machine

Not every computer owner would be as pleased as Andrew Wheeler that their new machine could run “all weekend” without crashing. But not everyone’s machine is “The Machine,” an attempt to redefine a relationship between memory and processor that has held since the earliest days of parallel computing.Wheeler is a vice president and deputy labs director at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. He’s at the Cebit trade show in Hanover, Germany, to tell people about The Machine, a key part of which is on display in HPE’s booth.Rather than have processors, surrounded by tiered RAM, flash and disks, communicating with one another to identify which of their neighbors has the freshest copy of the information they need, HPE’s goal with The Machine is to build a large pool of persistent memory that application p

physicists extend quantum machine learning to infinite dimensions

The proposed optical set-up that could be used to implement the new quantum machine learning algorithm over infinite dimensions. Credit: Lau et al. ©2017 American Physical SocietyPhysicists have developed a quantum machine learning algorithm that can handle infinite dimensions—that is, it works with continuous variables (which have an infinite number of possible values on a closed interval) instead of the typically used discrete variables (which have only a finite number of values).
The researchers, Hoi-Kwan Lau et al., have published a paper on generalizing quantum machine learning to infinite dimensions in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters. As the physicists explain, quantum machine learning is a new subfield within the field of quantum information that combines the speed of qua

google’s machine-learning cloud pipeline explained

When Google first told the world about its Tensor Processing Unit, the strategy behind it seemed clear enough: Speed machine learning at scale by throwing custom hardware at the problem. Use commodity GPUs to train machine-learning models; use custom TPUs to deploy those trained models. The new generation of Google’s TPUs is designed to handle both of those duties, training and deploying, on the same chip. That new generation is also faster, both on its own and when scaled out with others in what’s called a “TPU pod.”But faster machine learning isn’t the only benefit from such a design. The TPU, especially in this new form, constitutes another piece of what amounts to Google building an end-to-end machine-learning pipeline, covering everything from intake of data to deployment of the traine

kniterate launches kickstarter for automated knitting machine

Imagine that you’re just about to go to bed, when you realize that the sweater you were planning to wear the next morning is still at the dry cleaners. Not to worry, just send a file to your desktop whole-garment knitting machine and a custom-made sweater will be waiting for you when you wake up. At least, that is what you could do if you already had the desktop whole-garment knitting machine that’s about to be released. Kniterate is essentially a clothing printer that allows an entire knitted garment to be designed and fabricated within a desktop space. It started as an open-source knitting machine, evolved into a fully automated machine, and now the Kniterate team has launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the first round of machines available for purchase.Kniterate Co-founder and C

google machine learning gains kaggle and more

Google has already carved out a niche for itself in machine learning with projects like TensorFlow and Google Brain. Now, it's adding data science provider Kaggle, which runs contests related to machine learning and provides services for data discovery and analysis, to the fold. The company also is moving ahead with other machine learning projects, including an API providing intelligence for video.Google Cloud is gaining access to Kaggle's community of more than 850,000 data scientists and vice versa. Kaggle and Google Cloud will continue to support machine learning training and deployment, while the community gets the capability to store and query large data sets.Google on Wednesday also introduced its Cloud Video Intelligence API, providing an ability to search video for specific content

So far, chemists rely on visual inspection to see whether two materials have similar pores. EPFL scientists, in the framework

3-year-old twin brothers drown in washing machine

In a tragic incident, 3-year-old twin brothers today drowned in a washing machine while their mother was out to buy detergent at Rohini in north west Delhi, police said. The twins, Naksh and Neeshu, were inside the top loading washing machine for up to 30 minutes before being discovered by their father, they said. There was about 15 litres of water in the spinning tub of the washing machine and there is a possibility that the children fell into the spinner by climbing the pile of laundry, police said.Rekha, mother of the victims, said she had filled water in the washing machine and went to a nearby shop to buy detergent at 12.39 PM. When she came back, she did not find the children in the house. She raised an alarm and informed her husband, they said.Ravinder, who works with an insurance com

machine learning proves its worth to business

Machine learning couldn’t be hotter. A type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn to perform tasks and make predictions without explicit programming, machine learning has caught fire among the hip tech set, but remains a somewhat futuristic concept for most enterprises. But thanks to technological advances and emerging frameworks, machine learning may soon hit the mainstream.
Consulting firm Deloitte expects to see a big increase in the use and adoption of machine learning in the coming year. This is in large part because the technology is becoming much more pervasive. The firm’s latest research shows that worldwide more than 300 million smartphones, or more than one-fifth of units sold in 2017, will have machine learning capabilities on board.

7 things to do before buying a coffee maker

The coffee maker is the sun around which your kitchen orbits: The day waxes as the first cups brew in the morning, and wanes as the last pot of decaf is prepared.
That's why buying a new machine can be a really big decision and feel like the whole house's happiness rests in the balance. Here are some things to know before you do it.
1. Think about the long-term cost.
Buying a coffee maker is not a one-time expense. If you opt for a single-serving machine, like a Nespresso or a Keurig, you'll consistently be putting money into buying the necessary pods and capsules, which can run anywhere from $5 to $7 a package. If you buy a drip machine, you'll be buying new filters and grounds or beans (plus maybe a bean grinder). Weigh the options and really think about what will be better for you —

subway releases data after scientists weigh in on 50% chicken test [updated]

Enlarge/ Subway Founder Peter BuckGetty | James MarshallShare this storyUpdate, March 6: Subway has released the lab reports from both of its independent tests. Both MaxxamAnalytics in Ontario, Canada and Elisa Technologies, Inc. in Florida used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) designed for food products to quantify soy in the chicken. ELISA's are a standard type of assay that generally detect and quantify substances based on binding by an antibody. In the assay, antibody binding kicks off a detectable chemical reaction, commonly resulting in a color change. In the case of Elisa Technologies, the lab used an antibody that binds to soy flour proteins and the lab used known concentrations of those soy proteins for comparison to determine the quantity of soy protein in Subway's chic

watching this cleaning machine transform dirty old grout is so satisfying

I look at and write for the internet all day, and I'm not easily amazed. But watching this video of a crazy powerful cleaning machine do a number on old, dirty floors like it's nothing is both awe-inspiring and strangely therapeutic.
I'm no cleaning expert, so I can't say what sort of dark magicks they're using here, but the tile and grout look brand new. Actually, cleaner than brand new. So new that I thought this was a floor painting machine and everything was just getting a coat of white.
I sort of want to throw tea bags and coffee grounds on some tile now, just to watch this in person.

the eerie stop-motion game that's 'better than sex with jesus'

"I think we under-promised and over-delivered as far as sexual congress with the lord and savior is concerned," Gustafsson says. "Playing The Dream Machine is clearly better than that. The Dream Machine is more like being baby Jesus, on Christmas Eve, just lying there in the crib, toasty warm, getting gold and myrrh poured all over yourself, then realizing people will still be celebrating this very moment 2,000-plus years into the future."This is how Gustafsson and Zaring approach game development: with a dry humor that pushes the boundaries of what's accepted, what's traditionally done. The Dream Machine is an award-winning testament to this perspective. It's a point-and-click adventure game following a newlywed named Victor as he moves into a mysterious apartment complex and discovers a
