insider’s guide to composable infrastructure

In February, Houston hosted the Big Game – the biggest game of the season in the NFL. People from all over the world flocked to the city I call home to experience the best we had to offer in food, entertainment, and ultimately, football. Yet, without a Houstonian’s recommendation or previous experience in the city, those who came for the game missed out on the insider knowledge of where to go and what to do. Because after all, who knows a city better than the locals?
That same principal is true when you are considering updating the infrastructure in your datacenter. It’s fine to read about what the fastest, most cost-effective solutions are. But where you really glean the most valuable information is hearing from other customers who have already made their infrastructure decisions and can

adb says asia needs to double infrastructure spending

Developing countries in Asia and the Pacific will need to invest up to $1.7 trillion a year, or $26 trillion through 2030, to meet their infrastructure needs and to maintain the region's growth momentum—more than double the previous estimate in 2009, an Asian Development Bank report said Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. a hurricane shouldn't bankrupt your insurance company.

Illustration of the interplay between physical and financial infrastructure during an extreme event. Credit: Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Civil and Environmental EngineeringWhen a storm puts a tree branch through your roof, or a flood damages your foundation, you turn to your insurance company to pay for the repairs. And when it's only one, or two, or even 10 claims, insurance can cover the costs, no problem. But when it's an entire city? An entire state? The price of paying all of those claims at once can sometimes be enough to not only bankrupt the company, but to collapse the economy of an entire region.
Understanding the circumstances that lead to these financial disasters is fundamental to learning how to stop them from happening—and that's exactly what researchers in C

five vie to buy q-park's 835,000 parking places

The number of bidders for Dutch-based European parking garages operator Q-Park has been whittled down to five, the Financieele Dagblad said on Monday.Originally more than 20 parties were interested in acquiring the company which operates 6,100 car parks with more than 835,000 parking spaces in 10 northern European countries. Bids in excess of €2bn are expected for Q-Park which offers a steady and reliable source of income. The €2bn price tag includes net debt of €1.15bn. Analysts say Q-Park is an attractive investment in that it owns most of its parking garages and is not dependent upon leases. The FD revealed that the five companies interested in the second round of bidding included Chinese conglomerate China Oceanwide, Australian infrastructure investor Macquarie and an infrastructure fund

aws outage proves one cloud isn’t enough

AWS went out Tuesday—and so did half the internet. AWS is more reliable than most people’s datacenters and has all sorts of great features your average corporate IT infrastructure lacks. Yet utter failure visited S3 on the East Coast and lasted for a whopping 11 hours.
The major cloud vendors really, really want you to depend on them. Sure, you can hedge your bets by using multiple cloud regions, but ultimately this is infrastructure you don’t control and in many cases don’t really understand. This is an age-old problem now ported to the cloud.
Disaster recovery must be real time
Traditional DR isn’t what we’re looking for in the age of the internet. Most companies have DR plans that include multihour and multiday recovery times. That's not good enough.

utrecht loses eu most competitive region crown to london

The province of Utrecht has slipped to second place behind the London metropolitan area in the third edition of the European Commission’s regional competitiveness index. The Dutch province is now on a par with the English counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, north of the London metropolis, according to the new ranking.Utrecht scores particularly well in terms of its infrastructure and innovation. The Amsterdam region is the next best Dutch performer, coming in 12th out of 263 European regions. Zuid-Holland province, which includes Rotterdam and The Hague, is in 18th place.Friesland is the worst performer among the Dutch regions, in 83rd place. However, it does not perform any worse than regions the EU considers to be comparable, such as Drenthe in the Netherlands, or Nort

build offline-first mobile apps without pain

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a user in possession of a smartphone must be in want of a better connection. Despite billions of dollars of infrastructure investment and relentless technological innovation, it doesn’t take much more than a short drive to notice an essential reality of the connected era: You can’t assume a network connection will be available every time you want it. As mobile developers, it’s a truth that’s convenient to ignore.
Offline states in apps can be confounding to handle, but the problem begins with a basic and incorrect assumption—that offline is, by default, an error state. That made sense when we built apps for desktop computers with dedicated ethernet uplinks. It doesn’t make sense when the closing of an elevator’s doors renders an app completely us

future funds under table?

Although the rapid business case for a new national convention centre forecast a positive cost benefit analysis of $2.40 for every $1 expended (double that for light rail), the ACT government is unwilling to proceed without substantial federal government funding ("Convention Centre shaky", February 28. p.1).Unlike light rail, where the ACT government has not been deterred by unflattering economic analyses, the government seems to have lost interest because there is a risk of a significant cost blowout.Perhaps the government is content to keep most of its infrastructure spending in the one (light rail) basket. Is it possible the government is confident of receiving substantial largesse from a future federal Labor government? In late May 2012, just over a year before the demise of the previous

organised realty players to tap affordable housing segment: icra

The participation of organised real estate developers would increase in the affordable housing segment with various tax incentives announced in the Budget, the rating agency Icra said on Thursday.
"The thrust of the measures announced in the Union Budget 2017-18 for a promotion of the housing sector have been focused on the affordable segment. This segment which has high demand potential has been underserved on account of inadequate supply and limited credit availability," the agency said in a report.
The key measures taken include giving infrastructure status for affordable housing segment, relaxation of criteria for eligibility for tax benefit under Section 80IBA and higher allocation for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
"The budget accorded infrastructure status to affordabl

uk government unveils its post-brexit digital strategy

SkillsOne thing the report makes clear is that the government can't do it alone. It's enlisting the help of some of the UK's biggest employers and companies, which will offer four million free digital skills training "opportunities" to people who need them. Many are existing initiatives or have been expanded, but Google will offer five hours of free digital skills as part of its Garage initiative (unveiled late last year) and launch a summer programme in coastal towns, BT's Barefoot Computing Project will give teachers free extra computer science resources and O2 will continue to deliver online safety tips via its partnership with the NSPCC.Those companies, along with Apple, Sky, Microsoft, Samsung, Lloyd's, Barclays and Cisco, will contribute to the government's new Digital Skills Partner
