cryptocurrencies will shadow us economy in 2018: goldman sachs

Financial imbalances, including those in credit markets and cryptocurrencies, will shadow an otherwise robust 2018 US economy, said Goldman Sachs Group Inc. economist Jan Hatzius.
Hatzius has already made some predictions for the new year:  four Federal Reserve rate hikes, real US gross-domestic product growth quickening to an average of 2.6 per cent, the jobless rate dropping to about 3.5 per cent, and the yield curve not inverting. In a new report, Hatzius reiterated his expectation for overall economic strength, while flagging some concerns.
“Asset valuations in some areas — especially credit — have risen to high levels by historical standards,” Hatzius said in the “10 Questions for 2018” report issued late on Friday.
“While we have not seen the type of large credit expansions tha

As of today, he’s the seventh Goldman Sachs vet to join Donald Trump’s team.Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s Treasury Secretary, is a Goldman Sachs veteran. Steve Bannon, Trump’s chief White House strategist, is a Goldman Sachs veteran. Gary Cohn, Trump’s chief economics advisor, is the former president of Goldman Sachs. fed to raise rates 4 times in 2018 over tight labour market: goldman sachs

Goldman Sachs said it expects a tight US labour market and more normal inflation picture will lead the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates four times next year.
“The US economy heads into 2018 with strong growth momentum and an unemployment rate already below levels that Fed officials view as sustainable,” Goldman’s economists wrote in a note dated Friday.
Four hikes are more than Wall Street has been expecting for 2018. In a Reuters poll, Wall Street’s top banks saw the Fed raising borrowing costs three times in 2018.
The US central bank has raised rates twice this year and currently forecasts another hike in its benchmark lending rate from its current target range of 1.00 per cent to 1.25 per cent by the end of 2017.
The economy’s momentum will be helped by reconstruction foll

goldman sachs sets nifty target of 11,600 for dec 2018

Goldman Sachs expects the healthy run in the global equity markets, including India, seen this year to continue in 2018 as well. The US-based brokerage expects the benchmark Nifty to climb to 11,600 by the end of the next calendar year, implying a 12 per cent upside from current levels. The forecast is impressive, considering the 50-share index has already rallied 28 per cent in the past one year.Goldman Sachs estimates earnings growth of 18 per cent and 17 per cent in calendar years 2018 and 2019, respectively. “We expect solid earnings growth delivery in the next year and the following year. We see that as a credible backdrop for India to continue to perform,” said Timothy Moe, chief Asia Pacific equity strategist for Goldman Sachs.

goldman, bank of america results fail to inspire investors

When Bank of America and Goldman Sachs Group posted earnings overnight, one had record income from lending while the other had better-than-expected trading. The surprise is which was which.Goldman Sachs, the vaunted trading house, pointed to growth in its effort to lend to wealthy people as a bright spot. Bank of America, with 4500 branches across the US, relied on a smaller drop from its trading unit to help beat revenue estimates.

people with the knowledge of the strategy.
The bank aims to get the business running by the end of June, if not earlier, two of the people said.
Another said it’s still trying to work out security issues as well as how it would hold, or custody, the assets.
The move positions Goldman Sachs to become the first large Wall Street firm to make markets in cryptocurrencies, whose wild price swings and surging values have captured the public’s imagination but given pause to established institutions.
The bank is among a few mainstream firms clearing a new breed of bitcoin futures offered by Cboe Global Markets and CME Group Citigroup and Bank of America , for example

bitcoin bigger than buffett, boeing, new zealand's economy

Bitcoin’s extraordinary price surge means its market capitalisation now exceeds the annual output of whole economies, and the estimated worth of some of the world’s top billionaires.
With debate over its bubble status still raging, the flagship cryptocurrency continued its march higher on Monday, solidifying above $11,000 and bringing its climb this year to more than 1,000 per cent. With market tracker Coinmarketcap.com putting the total value of all bitcoins in circulation at $190 billion, it’s come a long way from August, when one coin could buy you a hefty supply of avocados.

goldman sachs investments boost profit amid trading slump

Rising stock markets have been kind to Goldman Sachs Group, but investors aren't giving the company much credit for that.Gains from investing in other companies rose 51 per cent in the third quarter to the highest in almost four years as share indexes touched records. While Goldman Sachs has argued that private equity-like investing is among its core skills, investors have historically discounted earnings driven by surprise gains in that unit. The bank's shares fell the most in six weeks.
"It appears as if Goldman Sachs is morphing into more of a private-equity firm, rather than a trading house," Octavio Marenzi, CEO of capital-markets management consultancy Opimas, said in an email.

donald trump says he doesn't want a poor person in cabinet

Contradicting rhetoric from his presidential campaign, President Donald Trump explained why he chose Wall Street billionaires for several of his Cabinet roles during a campaign-style rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Wednesday evening."So somebody said, 'Why did you appoint a rich person to be in charge of the economy?' I said, 'Because that's the kind of thinking we want ... because they're representing the country. They don't want the money. And they had to give up a lot to take these jobs.""We can't have the world taking advantage of us anymore," Trump added. "And I love all people, rich or poor, but in those particular positions, I just don't want a poor person," Trump added. "Does that make sense? If you insist, I'll do it — but I like it better this way, right?"Trump appointed a number of

goldman sachs exec ends bid to join trump administration

While Donovan is hardly a household name, and his nomination wasn’t considered a major development, his withdrawal is a story with a fairly broad reach. For example, Trump, after having used Goldman Sachs as a punching bag for much of the campaign, had chosen seven veterans of the Wall Street giant to work on his team. With Donavan stepping aside, and Anthony Scaramucci also walking away from an administration job offer, there are now five prominent Goldman Sachs executives remaining on Team Trump. There’s also the fact that the president still has far too many vacancies in key posts throughout his administration. brics summit 2017: how the 5 countries have fared

This weekend, the BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—will convene in the Chinese city of Xiamen for their annual summit. It wasn’t long ago that the BRICS were heralded as the future of the globalized economy. Then, for a variety of reasons, the group lost a bit of its luster. Now’s the time to check back in with them.1. BRICS straddle one quarter of the worldThe story of the BRICS—or technically, BRIC countries (South Africa joined in 2010)—begins with Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O’Neill, who wrote a paper in 2001 arguing that these were the emerging superstars most likely to dominate the 21st century globalized economy. Taken together, these five countries cover 40 percent of the world’s population and more than 25 percent of the world’s land. The sky see
