gop lawmaker: 'obamacare' may be saved by progressive activism

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has been watching the health care fight from retirement, and he’s come to his conclusion: his party is likely to fail.Speaking at a health care conference in Orlando this week, Boehner – who held dozens of ACA repeal votes against his better instincts – said the existing law is likely to remain largely intact, despite Republican dominance. “Most of the framework of the Affordable Care Act,” he said, “that’s going to be there.”The former Speaker added that his party will continue to struggle to agree among themselves on an alternative, and conceded many of the reform law’s most popular provisions are now likely irreversible.Of course, Boehner is no longer on the front lines of the conflict. Perhaps Republicans who are still in the thick of the figh

on health care, republicans find themselves lost without a map

Imagine being a House Republican right now. You hate the Affordable Care Act – at least, that’s what you’ve told your constituents – and you’re inclined to stick with your party leadership, but you’ve also seen a striking rise in progressive activism in your district. You’re probably a little more concerned about next year’s campaign cycle than you might otherwise would be.And then the Congressional Budget Office releases a devastating report that says your party’s health care plan would push tens of millions of Americans into the ranks of the uninsured.Given these circumstances, how inclined would you be to follow House Speaker Paul Ryan’s lead and vote for the American Health Care Act (“Trumpcare”)?Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a critic of the House GOP legislation, had an interesting conver

republicans take aim at congress' nonpartisan scorekeepers

As the debate over health care heats up, Republicans are fighting battles on multiple fronts. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and his allies have to worry about, among other things, intra-party divisions, Democratic criticisms, denunciations from industry stakeholders, spirted progressive activism, and opposition from most of the nation’s most prominent conservative organizations. But one foe looms larger than any other. The New York Timesreports:At some point very soon, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is going to issue a non-partisan report on the impact of the Republicans’ American Health Care Act, which some are calling “Trumpcare.” The analysis will provide all kinds of important data, including the cost of the GOP bill and how many Americans are likely to have health insurance i

obamacare replacement: mark walker says he'll vote against

Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) said he would not vote for an Obamacare replacement bill, according to a statement on Twitter."There are serious problems with what appears to be our current path to repeal and replace Obamacare. The draft legislation, which was leaked last week, risks continuing major Obamacare entitlement expansion and delays any reforms. It kicks the can down the road in the hopes that a future Congress will have the political will and fiscal discipline to reduce spending that this Congress apparently lacks," he said.Walker, chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC) continued: "The bill contains what increasingly appears to be a new heath insurance entitlement with a Republican stamp on it. In that form and absent of substantial changes, I cannot vote for the b

chrome for ios adds a safari-like reading list

Version 57 of Chrome for iOS arrived yesterday, touting an offline reading feature that's so much like Safari's, it even has the exact same name. To access Chrome's Reading List, hit the Share icon in the top-right corner of the screen, then tap Read Later to add the current page to your collection. Users can then browse their list of saved pages and check them out whenever, regardless of whether they're connected to the internet.Chrome's Reading List has a leg up on Apple's, since it separates saved items into "Unread" and "Pages You've Read" sections. As 9to5Mac points out, Safari doesn't have that functionality. That said, Chrome's desktop app, which was also recently updated to Version 57, doesn't support Reading List yet. This means that at the moment, saved pages are only be viewable

researchers identify how inflammation spreads through the brain after injury

Researchers have identified a new mechanism by which inflammation can spread throughout the brain after injury. This mechanism may explain the widespread and long-lasting inflammation that occurs after traumatic brain injury, and may play a role in other neurodegenerative diseases. The findings were published today in a study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. This new understanding has the potential to transform how brain inflammation is understood, and, ultimately, how it is treated. The researchers showed that microparticles derived from brain inflammatory cells are markedly increased in both the brain and the blood following experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). These microparticles carry pro-inflammatory factors that can activate normal immune cells, making them potentially toxic

presstv-swiss parliament rejects bill on burqa ban

The upper house of Switzerland’s parliament has rejected a controversial bill that would have banned Muslim women from wearing an Islamic face veil called burqa. The Council of State voted on Thursday against the measure, which had been approved by the lower house of the parliament back in September last year. The initiative had been led by the far-right Swiss People’s Party and would have changed the constitution to ban face-covering clothing in public. The lawmaker behind the botched bill, Walter Wobmann, is collecting signatures to launch a referendum on the ban. He has claimed that his campaign, called “Yes to a ban on face-covering,” has so far collected over two-thirds of the 100,000 signatures needed to force a referendum.Andrea Caroni, another lawmaker who has opposed the ban, praised

presstv-muslim lawmaker loses race to lead dem party

Former US Labor Secretary Tom Perez has narrowly defeated Democratic Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison of Minnesota to become the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee, delivering a blow to the progressive wing of the party led by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.Perez secured 235 votes on the second ballot on Saturday after failing to clear the 218-vote threshold to reach a majority in the first ballot, in which he only received 213 votes. While Perez was backed by former Vice President Joseph Biden and other key figures of the Obama administration that backed Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential bid, Ellison – the first-ever Muslim elected to the US Congress – enjoyed the support of Sanders and many of his allies.Perez was also supported by pro-Israel elements in the Democratic
