David Burke demonstrated the new Android P Beta gesture navigation controls on stage at Google I/O 2018. The new Beta version of the upcoming operating system is rolling out now to devices in the Pixel family as well as seven other phones. If you have the Beta on your device, gesture controls are not activated automatically. You have to turn them on manually to give them a shot. Here’s how to do it.Head into Settings and then do a search for “gestures.” You’ll see the gestures option, which you should turn on. Google gives you a brief rundown of what you can do with gestures on the same page.Editor's PickAndroid P Beta is rolling out now for Pixel family and seven other devices

oneplus 6 can't help copying iphone x

These days, it seems like a lot of new and upcoming Android phones are sporting a very familiar notch at the top of the display. Though Apple’s iPhone X wasn’t the first phone to utilize a notch as a solution to including front-facing sensors on a phone with a full screen display, it has certainly sparked a number of imitators in the time since its release. Today we’re learning that the upcoming OnePlus 6 may borrow another popular feature from Apple’s latest flagship: Gesture controls.OnePlus has already started rolling out gesture controls in a beta test for the 5T, and in a new teaser posted to its Facebook page, it suggests that the OnePlus 6 will get the same treatment. The brief video doesn’t actually tell us what kind of gesture controls we can expect, but as Dutch site Techtastic p

oneplus 5t officially gains full-screen gesture support

After remaining in beta for almost three months, the OnePlus 5T’s navigation gestures are available in the latest public release. The gestures are akin to the iPhone X’s, though they are not available for the OnePlus 5.This update arrives as part of the stable OxygenOS 5.1.0 update, which also brings Android 8.1 Oreo to both devices. Thanks to OnePlus’ latest public release, the OnePlus 5T officially supports navigation gestures à la the iPhone X.As with the beta releases, you can enable the gestures by going into settings and disabling the navigation bar. Gestures include swiping up from the middle to take you home and pausing for around a second after swiping from the bottom for recent apps. You can also swipe up from the left or right side of the screen to go back — a gesture that can be

iphone's future could include gesture controls and curved oled

You’ve probably noticed by now, but a lot of today’s flagship phones have very similar feature lists and specification sheets. As a result, many manufacturers are looking for ways to make their phones stand out from the crowd. This isn’t limited to just the realm of Android, either, as Apple is said to be considering two big features for future iPhones that could help differentiate them in an increasingly crowded market.According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is experimenting both with gesture controls and with curved OLED displays. To hear Bloomberg’s sources explain it, it sounds like these gesture controls would be an extension of existing 3D Touch functionality that’s present in current iPhones. In addition to detecting the amount of pressure you apply to the screen, as 3D Touc

david burke shows new android p gesture controls at google i/o 2018

David Burke, VP of Engineering at Google, took the stage at Google I/O 2018 to demonstrate some new gesture control features that will come with Android P.We first heard about these rumored gesture controls back in April when we saw artist renderings of a new navigation bar as well as a leaked Android P screenshot that suggested gesture controls like we see on the iPhone X.During Burke’s presentation of the controls, he pointed out how the gestures will make navigating in and out of apps easier and more fluid. The power of the gestures will be enhanced by artificial intelligence and machine learning to anticipate what you want at that particular moment.Editor's PickLeaked video: Android P’s alleged gesture-based navigationWe’re hours away from the Google I/O keynote, but details of one of

google details new android p features, including iphone x-like gesture controls

Enlarge/ The insanely colorful Android P Easter Egg. AndroidShare this storyMOUNTAIN VIEW, CA—Google I/O 2018 has officially kicked off, and with it come more details on the latest version of Android. A public beta for Android P, as it's still known, is out today for those who want to try the software for themselves. The usual caveats with installing unfinished software still apply.Notably, however, Google has made the beta available on devices beyond the company's own Pixel smartphones. Google says those who own the Essential Phone, Nokia 7 Plus, Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Vivo X21, Oppo R15 Pro, and the OnePlus 6 (when it comes out) will be able to access the early build alongside those with a Pixel or Pixel 2 phone. Google is crediting its Project Treble update initiative for ma

gesture controls on phones could make things harder, not easier

There seems to be a new trend looming over the horizon and, unsurprisingly, Apple is the trend setter. With smartphone screens almost fully flushed to the edges and with no room for buttons, it seems like the perfect time to reintroduce a new but not really new convention: gesture controls. Although it’s not really certain Google will adopt it in Android P, some OEMs, like OnePlus, seem to be headed in that direction regardless. And while gestures could make our user interfaces look fancier, they could actually make phones a bit more cumbersome to use in the long run. It’s Apple’s worldLike Face ID, the “slide up” multitasking gesture was meant to solve a problem that was really unique to Apple. iOS has no navigation bar and the only way you can jump between apps was via the home button. sonos finally brings alexa integration to its speakers in public beta form

Alexa is finally arriving on Sonos speakers in a new public beta!Sonos has announced that a new public beta software update that will become available today will finally bring the long-awaited Alexa voice controls along with it. The feature has been in testing in private beta until this point but will work on all current-generation Sonos speakers. You will need an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, or another Alexa-powered device in order for this to work. There will be an Alexa skill that you will have to enable through your Alexa app. The firmware update and Alexa skill should be available shortly. Tidal, iHeart, Audible, Pandora and other streaming services will be adding direct controls for the integration, and AirPlay 2 will make its way to Sonos in the future.Sonos also announced that its platfor

android 7.1.2 nougat beta 2 update arrives for pixel and nexus devices

Towards the end of January, Google officially announced Android 7.1.2 Nougat – an incremental maintenance release focused on refinements and bug fixes. As expected, Android 7.1.2 first started rolling out to a handful of Pixel and Nexus devices as a public beta. Now Google has just started rolling out the second beta version of Android 7.1.2 to eligible devices.Rolling out as build NPG47I, the new update is now available for the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Nexus Player. As you may recall, the Nexus 6P’s 7.1.2 update was delayed by a few weeks for some reason. Thankfully that’s not the case with this release, though; I received the beta 2 update on my 6P right away.See also:Android 7.1.2 beta 2 finally brings notification fingerprint gesture support to Nexus 6P6

android 7.1.2 beta 2 finally brings notification fingerprint gesture support to

When the first beta version of Android 7.1.2 Nougat was announced back in January, it came as no surprise that not many new features were present. Google originally said it was meant to be an incremental maintenance release focused on refinements and bug fixes, and for the most part, that was true. That is, except for Nexus 5X owners who got a little somethin’ extra.Google brought a handy feature to the Nexus 5X that allows users to swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to reveal the notification shade. This feature was present on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, along with most recent phones from Huawei. If you’ve never used a phone with this little feature, it’s super helpful, especially on bigger phones… like the Nexus 6P. Unfortunately, when the Nexus 6P’s 7.1.2 beta update finally arrive
