madeleine albright on fascism, trump, korea and her new book

Madeleine Albright has created plenty of history herself — as the first woman to be U.S. Secretary of State, for example — but in the last several years, a different slice of the past has caught her eye. Noticing the rise of a new trend among world leaders, she recalled what she’d learned, through study and personal observation both, about the rise of fascism that started almost exactly a century ago.Few of today’s forces of power would actually qualify as fascist in her view; more of them fall under the heading of “antidemocratic,” as she dubs President Donald Trump. But Albright knows that fascism doesn’t spread overnight, and she’s troubled enough by what she sees to have titled her new book Fascism: A Warning. On the occasion of the book’s release, she spoke to TIME about how history a

inessential: fascism these days

I can write just about anything I want to on my blog for the simple reason that it doesn’t matter.Times change. Fascists learn. There’s no pressing need to cut off any websites.* * *Fascists don’t leave so many fingerprints these days.Example: there’s no actual agreement anywhere that makes Twitter a de facto arm of the Trump Executive Branch and all its unofficial partners — but it is.Twitter bans the people who report abuse and it retains the Nazis and Russians. It amplifies the distractions and fills the pipe with lies and outrage. (And gives us special emoji as rewards.)The truth can’t be found in the ever-thickening fog.Though Twitter has been used for good, I’m more and more convinced that giving it anything just feeds it. If the medium is the message, then the message is lies, lulz,

inessential: today

Today wasn’t so bad. Sure, the enemies of democracy, the Constitution, rationality, compassion, national and international institutions, decency, competence, ethics, art, science, and truth itself — and of anyone who isn’t a white man — now darken the offices of power. But they haven’t done much yet. The bad days are still to come.My loathing and contempt for President Trump feels complete — but it isn’t. It will continue to deepen.

presstv-thousands march against racism, fascism in rome

Thousands have joined a march against racism in the Italian capital Rome, mobilized by a pre-election period dominated by bitter debate over immigration.Politicians, unionists and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni joined the march, plighted by rain, to call for a stop to racism and fascism in the country.Earlier this month, a 28-year-old Italian with declared Nazi sympathies went on a shooting spree in Macerata, a city in central Italy. He shot and wounded six black migrants before being stopped by police. Scuffles have broken out between far-left protesters and members of a neo-fascist party across Italy in the last few days in a sign of increasing tensions ahead of the March 4 national election.(Source: Reuters)

presstv-albright warns of growing fascism under trump

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has decried the growing threat of a resurgence of worldwide fascism bolstered by President Donald Trump’s scorn for democracy and human rights.“Fascism — and the tendencies that lead toward fascism — pose a more serious threat now than at any time since the end of World War II,” Albright wrote in a scathing op-ed for The New York Times published on Friday."The possibility that fascism will be accorded a fresh chance to strut around the world stage is enhanced by the volatile presidency of Donald Trump," she noted.Albright, who under President Bill Clinton became the first woman to lead the US State Department, warned that the American leadership is being eroded under Trump’s presidency."If freedom is to prevail over the many challenges to it,

'completely detached from reality': eu slams turkish fascism claims

Anyone who sees fascism in Rotterdam is 'completely detached from reality,' EU President Donald Tusk says in response to Turkish claims. The European Union's top officials have sharply criticised Turkey for accusing EU states Germany and the Netherlands of fascism, saying the charges were driving Ankara further away from its goal of joining the bloc.A war of words between Turkey and the EU has erupted this month over planned rallies by Turkish politicians in Rotterdam and other European cities that aimed to drum up support for plans to give Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers in a referendum on April 16.The Dutch banned the Rotterdam rally at the weekend, fearing tensions in Turkey over the referendum could spill over into its expatriate Turkish community. Erdogan retaliat

inessential: blogging system rewrite

I realized that I want my blog to be me on the web. This used to be true, but then along came Twitter, and then my presence got split up between two places. To make this work, I needed two things that my old system from 2009 didn’t provide:Title-less posts, andThe ability to run the site generator on my server, not just on my Mac.In other words, I needed to be able to write tweet-like posts with no title — while on the go, on my iPhone or iPad.I’ve done #1 and part of #2 — now it’s just a matter of figuring out how to deploy the system to my server (which is a shared host on Dreamhost, but where I can run CGI scripts). The code’s up on GitHub. I don’t really expect other people to use it, but you can, if you want to. I apologize in advance for not having time to write extensive documentation
