12 ways to use bar keepers friend in the kitchen

The active ingredient is oxalic acid, which you can also find in rhubarb, spinach, and other veggies. Bar Keepers Friend is biodegradable and safe for septic systems, too. And it's got a cute back story: It was discovered by accident when a chemist, who was boiling rhubarb, found that the pot he was using got clean as he cooked.
But all that would be meaningless if it didn't work! Besides being a homeowner favorite, this acid-based cleaner is endorsed by a lot of the big players in the kitchen space (among them: All-Clad, Calphalon, Eletrolux, Viking, Formica, and Kohler) as the best way to clean their pr

a bus powered by formic acid could hit the road this year

Creating sustainable vehicle fuel is rife with challenges, not least in finding the balance between developing a viable solution and putting forward ideas that have mainstream appeal: poo-powered cars sound great in theory, but, y'know...However, students from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Team FAST, are now throwing their hats into the ring with a design for the first ever system that allows a bus to drive on formic acid. these fear factor contestants will have acid sprayed down their throats

Ever hear of vinegaroons? We haven't either, but Ludacris is offering a little background on the arachnids in a sneak peek of the next Fear Factor."They spit out acid when they feel threatened," he says in the clip, below. And unfortunately, they're about to feel threatened -- because the newest batch of contestants have to put them in their mouths."You guys are going to really understand how that acid tastes," Luda says, before explaining the entire premise of the challenge: Basically, Fear Factor is pretending that a party got a little too wild, and the competitors need to "clean up" the mess that was left behind. What does that entail? Doing laundry, cleaning a bathroom and more. Along the way, they'll encounter a few more live (and disgusting) visitors. And don't forget: The entire tim

citric acid has the potential to produce respiratory sensitisers in e-cigarette

The use of citric acid in e-liquids needs to be investigated to further understand its potential to form potentially harmful anhydrides in the vapour. Citric acid occurs naturally in the body, is 'generally recognised as safe' in the USA, and is used in pharmaceutical inhalation products. However, thermal degradation of citric acid can occur at the operating temperatures of some vaping devices. Starting at around 175-203°C, citric acid can degrade to form citraconic anhydride and its isomer itaconic anhydride. These anhydrides are respiratory sensitisers--chemicals that, on inhalation, can trigger an allergic reaction varying from hay fever symptoms to anaphylactic shock.Scientists at British American Tobacco used gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry to analyse th

one amino acid, a whale of a difference

A single amino-acid variation in a key receptor in whales may help explain why some species of cetaceans evolved sleek, muscular bodies to hunt fish and seals, while others grow to massive sizes by filter-feeding on large volumes of plankton, an international research team has found.
