elections 2017: what the dutch papers say

A beaming Mark Rutte features on the front page of all the Dutch papers on Thursday morning, with the exception of Trouw, which carries a dejected Lodewijk Asscher.‘The centre wins’ the NRC headlines its election result analysis. ‘The Netherlands has woken up ‘a normal country’, in the words of VVD leader Mark Rutte,’ the paper writes. There has been no ‘populist revolt’, only a ‘couple of hammer blows’.Among the many parties and winners the NRC detects a clear trend: the centre dominates. ‘The patriotic spring announced by PVV leader Wilders has turned out to be a mirage. The Netherlands remains what it has essentially been for decades: many-facetted and largely moderate.’The paper calls the loss suffered by former coalition party Labour party a ‘dramatic’ one. ‘Once a pillar of the post-

rotterdam plans health insurance policy for all rotterdammers

Healthcare costs concept and EuroRotterdam council wants to offer all the city’s inhabitants a health insurance policy with an excess charge of just €50, the Volkskrant reports on Friday. The rest of the charge, which currently stands at €385, will be included in the monthly premium but thanks to a collective discount the policy would still benefit those who expect to incur high health costs, the paper said.Rotterdam has offered its own policy to low income households since 2013 and it currently has some 55,000 clients. Amsterdam, The Hague and Eindhoven have similar schemes in place and the policies are mainly advantageous for the chronically ill and the disabled, the paper writes.Rotterdam will now be talking to insurers about a policy for all Rotterdammers to become operational from Janu

beijing deploys facial recognition to foil toilet paper thieves

Talk of facial recognition tends to settle around either concerns about privacy or the security systems used at events to spot potential terrorists. China, though, has deployed the technology in Beijing for a different reason: to catch toilet paper thieves. The thieves are (were?) stealing toilet paper from public toilets, something made much harder thanks to modern dispensers with facial recognition abilities. Toilet paper thieves don’t just cost cities money; the public in general suffers when they go to use said toilets, only to find it lacking in paper. The solution, perhaps, are these dispensers that require visitors to look into a camera before toilet paper is dispensed. It records their face, then provides exactly 2ft of toilet paper before cutting off the supply for that bathroom v

stolen van goghs back on show in amsterdam after 14 years

Van Gogh Museum, AmsterdamSome 14 years after they were stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam,  ‘View of the Sea at Scheveningen’ and ‘Congregation leaving the Reformed Church at Nuenen’ by Vincent van Gogh have finally come home. Not coincidentally, the big reveal on Tuesday coincides with another big reveal: a documentary about how the paintings were stolen and what happened to them afterwards as told by Okkie Durham, professional burglar. The Dutch and international press were given a preview.Durham decided to come clean to documentary maker Vincent Verweij after having denied for years he was responsible for the heist. In spite of his protestations of innocence Durham could be placed at the scene. He lost his cap – and dna – during a hurried descent by rope and police finally cau

lily collins pens open letter forgiving father phil collins in new book

Lily Collins addresses her tumultuous relationship with her father Phil Collins with an open letter in her new book of essays, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me. "Because my dad was often gone, I never wanted to do anything that would make him stay away even longer," she writes in the chapter titled "A Letter to All Dads." "I became extra careful about what I said and how I said it, afraid he'd think I was angry or didn't love him. And the truth is, I was angry. I missed him and wanted him there."The 27-year-old actress' parents divorced when she was 5 and Phil Collins then moved from England to Switzerland, creating an estrangement that she writes had a profound effect on her -- ranging from relationship issues to her struggle with eating disorders. "I've realized that many of my

new york times reporters' tweets will appear in its paper edition

The paper's intro section will also spotlight the most popular online posts, but including tweets is about more than relaxing the walls between the newspaper's digital and tangible versions. It's showing that tomorrow's stories are broken right now on Twitter -- and that the NYT reporters' accounts are part extensions of the paper, part outlets in their own right. As Recode points out, reporters like the organization's White House correspondent Maggie Haberman are augmenting their own coverage and even publishing stories that don't appear in print, online or in the NYT app. Eventually, those tweets will likely find their way into the latter formats. For now, they'll pop up on A2 and A3 alongside other tantalizing snippets enticing you deeper into that day's edition of the paper of record.

The Zaanse Schans is like an open air museum and visitors just step into the houses’, Zaanse Schans director Peter-Jan van Steenbergen told

Large amounts of side streams still end up in landfills and incineration.Side stre

mastheads and meanings - india legal

Washington Post slogan triggers debate and discussion~By Dilip BobbThe Washington Post, one of the world’s leading newspapers, has slipped in a new slogan under its masthead that is generating a lot of debate and discussion. The slogan, noticed last week on its online edition, says “Democracy Dies in Darkness.’’ Many see it as a comment on the Trump administration and a response to the President’s attacks on sections of the media in America, including the Washington Post. In its 140-year history, the Post has done without a slogan under its masthead and to introduce one now (so far, it appears on the online paper but is expected to appear on the print edition very soon), is a significant move.  The buzz in Washington and other newsrooms is that is a joint statement by Executive Editor Mart
