public access' time is done, but a better engadget community awaits

It's been just shy of two years since we unveiled Public Access, our grand experiment in community contribution. In that time, we've seen some excellent stories published on the platform by you, and we are grateful for those efforts. Today, however, we are moving the Engadget community in a new direction and will be shutting Public Access down this Thursday, March 9th. For those of you in the community, you can rest assured your contributions aren't going anywhere -- the links to your stories will remain live and shareable, even though your profile pages will disappear. That said, we will be removing all site navigation to Public Access stories, so you need to copy the links to your stuff if you want to be able to read and share them moving forward. And, if you have any questions, just ema

your wd networked drive is vulnerable to remote attacks

The kicker? WD did fix one login bypass flaw through a firmware update, but it introduced another in the process. We've asked WD for its take on the situation and will let you know if it has a response. However, the Exploitee.rs team says it's revealing these pre-patch bugs to the public because of WD's "reputation within the community." Supposedly, the company doesn't pay attention to the seriousness of security flaws -- this open disclosure is a way of pressuring WD into action. True or not, you may not want to allow internet access to your My Cloud gear unless it's absolutely necessary.

vp mike pence used aol email for state business while governor

The only problem is, that while the public is apparently unworthy of examining Pence's emails, it's evident that at least once, hackers compromised the account. The Star reports that in June, someone sent emails to his contact list claiming Pence and his wife had been attacked in the Philippines. There aren't any details on exactly how the messages were sent, but if they had access to his contact list, the paper cites experts saying the hackers likely penetrated the account, giving them access to his inbox and sent messages. At the time, the then-governor apologized to the people who received the messages and created a new account. In a statement, Pence's office said that "Similar to previous governors, during his time as Governor of Indiana, Mike Pence maintained a state email account and a

the shins made a collage app for band flyers

And so, he, together with musicians-turned-coders Zeke Howard and Ben Fogarty resolved to create Pasted. It's a simple app to use -- you select photos, and then it combines them together. You can then redefine the masking for each image, enlarge, rotate and position the individual elements, and apply various treatments. You can also add stickers and other pre-made elements to your images.Using the app, Mercer was able to put together a simple image with his and the Engadget video team's faces in a matter of minutes. The more time you spend on a collage, obviously, the better results you'll get. The cover art for The Shins' latest two singles (like "Mildenhall," above) was created using the app, and it looks far more professional than the quick image of Engadget faces.Pasted will launch in

lg is working on a vr headset with valve

This is not the first time LG has dipped its toes into the VR pool. Last year, it released the (largely forgettable) 360 VR headset for the G5 smartphone. LG hasn't released many details about its new prototype, simply calling it a "high fidelity, next generation VR experience." But we do know the headset will use Valve's royalty-free SteamVR 3D tracking system. Valve began offering open access to SteamVR tracking last year, but LG is the first company besides HTC to utilize it.LG will show off its new headset in Valve's booth at this year's GDC in San Francisco, where it says it will meet with developers to collect feedback and impressions. Engadget has a team of reporters at GDC — hopefully we'll get to see the headset up close before the show is over. Information on the prototype's pric

'lawbreakers' prepares to take on 'overwatch' with closed beta

It's a closed beta, so not everyone will get a chance to try the game this week. Everyone who received a key for the game's alpha will automatically get access. If you signed up and didn't get a key, Boss Key Productions says you'll have a higher chance of getting into the beta. If you're totally new to the game, you can sign up on its official website. Boss Key will be inviting select players from all signup groups.Lawbreakers is coming out at a time when the market for online team-based shooters is reaching the saturation point. Blizzard megahit Overwatch currently dominates that space, while Gearbox's Battleborn and Epic Games' Paragon could provide competition as well. But, in a recent interview with Engadget, Bleszinski said he believes there's still an audience for multiple character

community meeting at the block shut down as anger spills over

Land on The Block will be handed to a student housing provider under a 99-year lease, it was revealed at a fiery public meeting on Thursday.About 200 hundred people attended the Redfern Community Centre to hear the AHC explain its plans to build a 16-storey student accommodation building on The Block as part of the site's redevelopment, called the Pemulwuy Project.
Protesters, pictured outside Redfern's Community Centre on Thursday night, say the battle for The Block has begun again. Photo: suppliedBut attempts to win community support for the project were defeated and the meeting called off, as former residents of the historic site accused the Aboriginal Housing Corporation of selling out the community. Many members of the Aboriginal community were in the audience, including former resid

open and shut

In the UK, all proceedings of the Supreme Court and Appeal Court are filmed and broadcast. The US Supreme Court website provides audio recordings of all oral arguments. In fact, most democracies, including Australia and South Africa, have provided access to digital technology.India lags behind. Rao argues that if access to the executive can be provided through RTI, and to Parliament through video recordings, then why exempt judicial proceedings from the larger public gaze because “justice is not only to be done but seen to be done.” That is a commandment of democratic governance, he forcefully argues.Pillai’s story extols what he calls a “landmark” judgment which, in effect, shields an individual or groups from public scrutiny. big losers from barnaby joyce moving apvma public servants to armidale

Whether Barnaby Joyce or Pauline Hanson is the wiser statesman, the better politician or the more intelligent citizen is a moot question upon which few could hold a certain opinion, for now at least. The evidence, such as it is, is not yet all in. But there is nothing wrong with either of their impulse to believe that the nation might be a good deal better off if the Commonwealth, and Commonwealth agencies, again developed a presence in regional, rural and remote Australia. The pity is that both seem to lack the brains, equipment or the will to develop their ideas beyond mere feelings, prejudices and slogans, or penchant for misappropriation of public money.
Question time: Barnaby Joyce is on a crusade to get government agencies into the bush. Photo: Alex EllinghausenPerhaps one could for

microsoft reminds us that so.cl exists by closing it down

So.cl launched in 2011, the same year that Google+ came along, during a time when it probably didn't seem insane to launch a Facebook competitor. Coming from Microsoft Research, the site was first aimed at University students before it opened its doors to the wider public. It carried a tiled look to match the "Metro" design used for Windows 8 on mobile and desktop.Much like Metro, however, nobody really used it, perhaps because it was never really clear what it was for. It ended up mostly being a site to share and discuss random stuff you found on the internet, something you can already do on Facebook. Unlike Facebook, though, it lacked basic features including the ability to just upload a photo. In the end, it was a good real-life research experiment for Microsoft Research's Fuse Labs, if
