spotify is producing 3 original podcasts, with more to come this year

EnlargeShare this storySpotify is doing more to become the place you go for original audio and video content, rather than just preexisting content. The streaming company announced that it is producing three original podcasts about various aspects of music culture, with more titles to be announced later this year. The first episode of one of the podcasts is already available: Showstoppers, with host Naomi Zeichner, Editor in Chief of The Fader magazine, focuses on "pop culture analysis of our favorite music moments in TV."The second podcast, called Unpacked, debuts March 14, coinciding with South by Southwest. Hosted by Matt FX, music supervisor for Comedy Central’s Broad City, and Michele Santucci of Spotify Studios, Unpacked brings the festival scene to you even when you're miles away fro

spotify lands '2 dope queens' and other hit wnyc podcasts

Since its establishment in 2015, WNYC Studios, a branch of the WNYC public radio stations, has been home to big shows like Radiolab, FreakonomicsRadio, On The Media and others. Starting today, those podcasts are available on Spotify.Aside from the just-mentioned, other WNYC programs that will be streaming for all Spotify users include Alec Baldwin's Here's The Thing; Death, Sex & Money; The Sporkful; Only Human; The Fishko Files; New Yorker Radio Hour; Nancy; Snap Judgment; Note To Self; Sooo Many White Guys and 2 Dope Queens. New episodes will be available only on Spotify during that time, beginning with the third season premiere on March 21st.Spotify recently surpassed 50 million pai

spotify is close to offering lossless-quality music

Tidal's lossless-quality music streaming was its original selling point over big name rivals, but it might not have that advantage for much longer. Both The Vergesources and Reddit members have discovered that Spotify is prepping its own lossless offering, Spotify Hi-Fi. Much like with Tidal, paying $20 per month would give you audio befitting your premium headphones. There's no word as to when Hi-Fi would arrive -- Spotify isn't commenting beyond acknowledging that it's "always testing new products." However, it certainly appears to be getting close.

spotify might delay album releases for 'free' users

Spotify's contracts with Universal, Sony and Warner -- which collectively make up the bulk of its library -- have been in flux for some time. As the company has grown, and music streaming has played a larger role in the industry, labels have started demanding higher rates. Accepting such terms would threaten Spotify's business model, which is yet to reach profitability. The service is growing, however, which bodes well for the years ahead. With 50 million paying subscribers, it's shown it can convert free users and fend off competitors like Tidal, Apple Music and Google Play Music. Losing label support would, of course, be hugely damaging. It's all the more important as Spotify inches toward an IPO. Back in February, TechCrunch reported that the company had shifted its public offering plans

google's first original podcast is 'city soundtracks'

Three episodes have been produced, and it's not clear if more are in the works. The first centers on Kelhani and her experiences growing up in Oakland. The second is an exploration of New Orleans, and the musical landmarks which 'Queen of Bounce' Big Freedia holds dear. The final episode revolves around Britt Daniel and Jim Eno, members of the rock band Spoon, as they discuss their favorite venues, recording and writing locations in Austin, Texas. Part playlist, part interview, they should appeal to the fans of each artist and also anyone interested in music culture.Podcasts are an obvious way for companies like Google to tempt listeners across to their service. Music exclusives are another option -- Apple Music and Tidal have had plenty -- but it's increasingly difficult to lock an artist

spotify reaches 50 million paid subscribers milestone

There’s little doubt at this point that Spotify is the leading service when it comes to streaming music, but the company has just further cemented its position with its latest milestone: 50 million paid subscribers. The company revealed the achievement earlier this week, but what makes it really impressive is the fact that it was only back in September when Spotify topped 40 million paid users. The service has been enjoying this steady rate of growth for some now, as before hitting 40 million in September it hit 30 million subscribers in March 2016. When including free users, Spotify’s total number of subscriber is now at well over 100 million. It’s unclear, however, if the growth in paid users is due to people switching over from the free tier, or from brand-new sign-ups.To compare, Apple

spotify prepares `lossless` hi-fi option, hits 50 million paying subscribers

Spotify has announced it has reached 50 million paying subscribers in a tweet from its official Twitter channel. It had but 30 million subscribers as of March last year, meaning the company has gained another 66% in the past twelve months alone, after having launched all the way back in October 2008. That’s a huge gain in a short time for the company and should help Spotify generate a profit sometime this century. In addition to this news, some subscribers have reportedly received a lossless audio offer from within their Spotify apps called Spotify Hi-Fi. Reddit users suggest that it has been seen for an additional $5, $7.50 or $10 per month — on top of their existing subscription price — though those who try to sign up for it are greeted with a “This is not available in your area” message.

waze and spotify partner to make your commute safer and more enjoyable

Waze and Spotify have announced an interesting partnership. You’ll soon find a few Spotify features in Waze and a few Waze features in Spotify. Here’s how it works. google play music launches its first original podcast, city soundtracks

Podcasts are hot right now. Yes, the act of downloading and streaming audio files just to listen to people speaking has had a huge resurgence in the past couple of years. More and more people have been subscribing to podcasts and listening to them while they drive to work, or working out at their gym, or just sitting back on the couch.Today, Google announced that it is joining the podcast trend by launching its own, City Soundtracks, as part of a tie-in to its Google Play Music service. It also seems to be a way for the company to help sell music tracks on Google Play. The premise of City Soundtracks is that each episode focuses on one artist, and the city they consider their home, as they offer insights on the musical themes that have come out of each location. The artist for each episode

waze adds spotify integration for in-app playlists

Navigation app Waze has announced a new integration with Spotify that brings playlists to the app. According to the company, this integration means users can now access their Spotify playlists from within the Waze app, eliminating the need to toggle between the two while on the road. You’ll know when the feature rolls your way when a Spotify icon appears within your Waze app.Waze announced the new integration today, saying it is coming to Android users first within the next few weeks, and that it’ll be coming to iOS at some point in the future (no time frame was provided, however). Once the update rolls your way, you’ll see a green circular Spotify icon within the Waze app. Tap that icon and it’ll open Spotify. From there, the last song you listened to on Spotify will automatically begin pl

spotify integrates itself into waze (and vice-versa)

The partnership is somewhat surprising, as Waze is owned by Google, which has its own Play music-streaming service that competes with Spotify. However, Spotify's 50 million-strong subscriber base dwarfs Google Play (and every other music service), so it could be a way for Google to prod all those users into trying the Waze platform. That would have a couple of benefits for Google: It would improve Waze's crowd-sourced traffic accuracy, and possibly drive Spotify subscriber's to Waze's new ride-sharing platform. That service has a strong need for more users, especially since Google is planning to expand it to other cities beyond the Bay Area. For Spotify, which has been pursuing off-beat partnerships (like one with the New York Times), it could further bolster its user ranks.Whatever the rea

spotify hi-fi music tier tipped with lossless audio

The days of low-quality audio streaming may be behind us, at least as far as Spotify is concerned. Screenshots from the service have appeared online detailing a not-yet-available “Spotify Hi-Fi” service that gives users access to lossless CD-quality audio for an additional $5 or $10 per month. Users aren’t yet able to sign up for the service and the pricing seems inconsistent at this time. While the service isn’t yet available, the appearance of the upgrade option indicates big things in Spotify’s near future, namely a change that will help the service compete with other lossless alternatives while leveraging higher-quality mobile listening options. The cost, according to the screenshots that have surfaced, are in addition to the regular monthly fee.Reports of the new service are appearing

guess how many people now pay to use spotify? yup, 50 million

50 million people now pay to use Spotify. Photo: Anders Wiklund/TT
Spotify now has 50 million paying subscribers, growing by ten million in less than six months.
The Swedish streaming giant posted the figure on Twitter. Apple Music, its closest competitor, said in December that it had 20 million subscribers.
The update was the first from privately held Spotify since September, when it passed 40 million paying subscribers. Spotify said in June that is had a total of 100 million users, including on its free, advertising-backed tier which is the bane of some record executives.
Spotify has maintained its edge despite concerted efforts from competitors. Apple, which launched its streaming service in 2015, and rap mogul Jay Z's upstart Tidal have both tried to woo listeners by offering

58 tech companies file amicus brief against revised travel ban

As with the the previous travel ban, these companies are seeking an immediate injunction arguing that the executive order "would inflict significant and irreparable harm on U.S. businesses and their employees." The revised ban would temporarily bar citizens from six predominantly Muslim nations from entering the country and reduce the number of refugees that the US accepts annually to just 50,000, less than half the number normally accepted.Curiously, this brief does not enjoy the same broad support as the original, which garnered 127 signatories in all. Plus, a number of major players like Google, Apple, Netflix and Spotify who signed the first amicus brief in response to the original ban are missing from this new court filing.

spotify softens stance on paid tier windowing in exchange for lower royalty rate

Spotify may be finally softening its stance on windowing. According to the Financial Times, the music streaming service is nearing new deals with major labels that would allow artists to restrict new music to paid subscribers only for a short window of time. The concession, which Spotify has long resisted, would reportedly be in exchange for the labels agreeing to reduced royalty fees for songs. The proposed deals are seen as a crucial step as Spotify tries to clear the path for an IPO in 2018.Spotify declined to comment on the FT report, which states that the deals with Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group could be completed within weeks. The streaming service has been operating on month-to-month deals for some time now.Spotify's position has always been that a wide rel
