arctic seed vault grows as defense against food crisis

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a gene bank located about 800 miles from the North Pole, is largely to thank for that. It bolstered its reserves two days ago when it received nearly 50,000 seeds, according to Crop Trust, a nonprofit that works closely with the vault.Institutions from the US, the UK, Mexico, Benin, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, the Netherlands and Belarus deposited seeds, bringing the vault's sample total to 930,821. 4,000 russians now fighting in syrian insurgency, says putin

Thousands of Russians are still fighting for militant forces in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested on Thursday.Speaking to a gathering of naval officers returning from the region, Putin said military intelligence believes as many as 4,000 Russians remain in Syria. A further 5,000 fighters from former Soviet states are also believed to be fighting.  The Russian president gave no sign as to how exactly the figures break down. There are at least nine significant groups still fighting in the conflict, which is now entering its sixth year.  Russia has been involved in a military campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad since September 2015. Russian organization and firepower have been behind increasingly confident operations to retake ground lost to opposition forces.

clipboard management with copied and workflow – macstories

One of the common challenges involving a switch from macOS to an iPad is the lack of desktop-like clipboard managers on iOS.By nature of the platform1 and technical restrictions imposed by Apple, apps like Pastebot or Alfred wouldn't be able to adapt their Mac capabilities to the iPad. Third-party iOS apps can't constantly monitor changes to the system clipboard in the background; similarly, it isn't possible for an iPad app to register as the handler of a keyboard shortcut at a system-wide level. An app would have to at least be currently in use via Split View to listen for clipboard changes, but, even in that case, it would have to be active to receive external keyboard commands. With these limitations, it's no surprise that clipboard managers aren't a flourishing category on the iPad App

brexit prompts ship insurers to look at luxembourg, cyprus bases | business

UK-regulated ship insurers are preparing plans to open new outposts in European Union jurisdictions such as Luxembourg and Cyprus, fearing that Brexit will hinder access to the EU's financial market, industry sources involved say.Britain dominates the global marine insurance market and losing access to specialist Protection and Indemnity (P&I) clubs – marine insurers owned by shipping firms – could further weaken other parts of its multi-billion pound shipping services sector. Several Greek shipowners have already moved operations out of Britain anticipating changes that could remove their favorable “non-domicile” tax status.Of the 13 major global P&I clubs, six are regulated in the United Kingdom and are estimated to account for over half the total market share of an industry that insures

founder of popular `$4 smartphone company` arrested for fraud

Photo by Gadgets 360Last year, an Indian company called Ringing Bells released the world’s cheapest smartphone called the Freedom 251. The budget device was priced at just 251 rupees, which is less than $4. It now looks like the company’s founder, Mohit Goel, has gotten himself into trouble with the law. Here’s what happened. Someone paid 3 million Indian rupees to Ringing Bells for an order of handsets but unfortunately received less than half of the order. What’s more, a lot of the devices he did receive turned out to be defective. The buyer then did what everyone else would probably do in a case like this, which is to ask for a refund for the unfulfilled order. But it looks like things didn’t go quite as planned. Not only did he not receive the refund, Mohit Goel and one of his colleagues
