One of Sweden's most notorious killers has been formally charged by German prosecutors over the murder of a Jewish woman in Frankfurt in 1992.
Dubbed the "Laser Man" in Swedish media, 63-year-old John Ausonius gained notoriety in the 1990s when he went on a six-month shooting spree with a laser sight between 1991 and 1992 in Sweden, injuring 10 immigrants and killing one.

The German Foreign Ministry has issued a warning over a "fake news" story being shared on social media, claiming they had issued a travel warning for Sweden.
At the weekend Facebook pages associated with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party posted a link to the Foreign Office’s travel information on Sweden claiming that “a massive travel warning” had been issued on March 1st.
"It’s strange that we never heard anything about this in the media," the AfD’s Berlin branch wrote.
But the German Foreign Ministry dismissed the story as "fake news", adding that there was no travel warning for Sweden.

Firing up victory-drunk conservatives at a rally outside Washington, Trump trashed long-time allies as he sought to justify his own controversial crackdown on immigrants.

A ranking of European countries based on their attractiveness for international students handed Sweden a spot in the top-five.
The study, released on Wednesday by Study.EU, argued that Germany is the best option for international students studying in Europe, followed by the UK, Netherlands, France and Sweden.
It ranked 30 European countries according to three categories: education, costs, and life and career. Sweden was awarded a total score of 60.6 out of 100, compared to Germany's impressive 83.2.
Sweden performed well in the education category, scoring another fifth place. In the life and career category it came in eighth, but fared less well in the cost category, not even making the top-ten.

Sweden has sought to set the record straight after Donald Trump linked immigration to a supposed rise in violence in the Scandinavian country, publishing "facts" to correct "simplistic" and "inaccurate information".
The foreign ministry posted on its website a series of claims that have been circulating in the media since the US president made his remarks about Sweden in a speech in Florida on February 18.
Addressing supporters, Trump listed places that have been targeted recently by terrorists, citing Paris, Brussels, Berlin and Nice, and appeared to suggest something had happened in Sweden on February 17.

Sweden carries out by far the most border controls among the countries given special permission to do so by the EU, according to numbers reported by public broadcaster Sveriges Radio.
Along with Sweden, Norway (which is part of the Schengen zone), Denmark, Germany and Austria have been granted special permission by the EU to operate temporary border controls in the normally passport-free Schengen area.
And according to Sveriges Radio's Ekot show, 3.2 million checks were carried out at Sweden’s borders between July and August 2016 alone – eight times more than in Germany (which carried out 394, 503 during that period).

A woman suspected of killing her father in a high-profile Swedish murder case is likely to be convicted despite a lack of technical evidence, experts say.
The woman is also suspected of attempted murder against her mother at the same as killing her father last year and has also been connected with the drowning of her husband in 2015.
The woman has been dubbed the 'Arboga woman' after the scene where the alleged violent crimes took place, a summer cottage in Arboga, central Sweden.
The 42-year-old woman, who ran her own business and has six children, is trained as a social worker and has no previous convictions.

Sweden granted protection to more asylum applicants per million of the country's inhabitants in 2016 than any other European Union Member State, new figures from EU stats office Eurostat show.
The Nordic nation granted protection to 7,040 asylum applicants per million of its population in 2016 – the highest number of all Member States – followed by Germany with 5,420 per million residents, and Austria with 3,655 per million.
The UK by comparison granted protection to 260 applicants per million of its population. Poland granted the fewest proportionally – only 10 per million people.
