t-mobile more than doubles its gigabit lte availability

According to Qualcomm, gigabit LTE is achieved when you combine carrier aggregation along with 4X4 MIMO and 256 QAM technologies. Seeing as 430 of those markets have all three technologies, they are the first to be gigabit LTE compatible. T-Mobile also plans to invest in License Assisted Access (LAA), which is a tech that taps into unlicensed spectrum for even more speed. In a live demonstration on stage, T-Mobile showed a Samsung Galaxy S8 (one of the first gigabit LTE phones) running Ookla's Speedtest app. The test resulted in download speeds of 611.33 Mbps and upload speeds of 47.35 Mbps. "This is what I'm talking about when I say T-Mobile has America's best unlimited network and the only one purpose built for unlimited," said Neville Ray, T-Mobile's CTO in a statement. "Not only do we

t-mobile gigabit lte goes big: what you need to know

5G may still be some way off, but the chance of getting super-speedy data service on your phone just increased significantly. T-Mobile has announced its Gigabit LTE network has more than doubled since the carrier began rolling out the technology last year, with over 920 markets now served with LTE Advanced. Read on for what you need to know…Gigabit LTE isn’t 5G, but it’s a big step toward that5G is the big buzzword in the mobile industry right now, but we’re not quite at the point where commercializing it is possible. Instead, Gigabit Class LTE – or LTE Advanced – is offering some of the speed improvements we’re expecting from true 5G, but in a form that can actually be deployed today. Importantly, it’s not just a stopgap measure but something that will help the transition to 5G when that

t-mobile says galaxy s8 and its lte make the perfect pair

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is out and, naturally, carriers are jumping at the opportunity to announce their availability and promos. Ever the Un-carrier, T-Mobile is doing more than just revealing dates and prices. It is also saying why you’d want to get a Galaxy S8 from them. And that reason will be to achieve the smartphone’s full gigabit potential on T-Mobile’s trifecta of LTE technologies, allowing the Galaxy S8 to reach downloads of up to 900 MB/s on average. This staggering almost four-digit figure is made possible through three technologies available on T-Mobile’s LTE network. There’s 4×4 MIMO that utilizes four antennae for simultaneous data transfers, the usual Carrier Aggregation that bundles several bands together, and 256 QAM that allows more data to be transferred in a single sessio

t-mobile dominates opensignal's mobile tests, but verizon remains strong

OpenSignal recently published its August 2017 ‘State of Mobile Networks USA’ report, and in it we see the results of its evaluation of the biggest carriers in the nation. While Verizon has a solid history of getting top marks in these sort of tests, T-Mobile has slipped ahead of it this time, managing to take the top slot in every category including latency and 4G performance. The OpenSignal evaluation looks at performance on the networks belonging to Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T. In terms of the overall performance of these carriers in all six evaluation categories, T-Mobile won. Categories include the availability of 4G, download speed and latency on the 4G network, latency and download speeds on the 3G network, and download speeds overall. In some cases, T-Mobile just barely slippe

moto z2 force is getting an update to enable gigabit lte on verizon

The new “next big thing” for carriers to crow about is going to be Gigabit LTE service. Verizon has already announced plans to launch it later this year, while T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint have all announced or tested version as well. Gigabit LTE should bring unbelievably fast speeds, with download speeds reaching around 1 Gb/s and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. To get those kinds of speeds, Verizon will use four carrier aggregation and leverage both licensed and unlicensed spectrum. This technology is called Licensed Assisted Access or LAA.Several phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, HTC U11, and Moto Z2 Force all feature the hardware to see these speeds. They all have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor and Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, but the Moto Z2 Force is the first of the bunch to get

the iphone 8 has a gigabit lte modem (updated)

(Update: As some readers have pointed out, the iPhone 8 (according to iFixit's teardown) doesn't appear to have the antennas necessary to harness gigabit LTE. We've updated this post to reflect that. Apologies for the mistake.)The latest iPhones do offer support for more LTE bands and networks (depending on your model) than ever before, but its rivals appear to be ahead when it comes to gigabit LTE.Samsung's Galaxy S8, Note 8 phones and even the Essential phone all pack gigabit LTE modems, ready to go. It'll be a mainstay of nearly all new phones going forward, and Apple's new phone, available today, starts behind its biggest competitor. Phone carriers haven't initiated the roll-out of this next-generation LTE. However, all the major US phone networks are all promising to launch gigabit LT

the iphone 8 could sacrifice gigabit lte

Apple’s legal spat with Qualcomm might seem like background noise easily tuned out by iPhone users, but it could have a big impact on how well the iPhone 8 performs. The two companies are currently embroiled in a patent argument over cellular radio standards, with Apple threatening to withhold royalty payments that it claims are extortionate. Now, the new iPhone might end up less capable on next-generation networks as a result. The problem is gigabit LTE, cellular wireless that can deliver 1 gigabit per second download rates. That requires both a gigabit LTE-capable modem in the device, and a network with support for the new standard. It’s something the big US carriers are looking to roll out as they hunt faster data speeds, not to mention networks internationally, but the iPhone 8 may not

verizon’s gigabit upgrade pricing still makes almost no sense

EnlargeGetty Images | Scott OlsonShare this storyWhen Verizon FiOS unveiled a $70-per-month gigabit Internet plan two weeks ago, the company's existing customers quickly discovered that the deal was too good to be true. It turned out that only new customers were eligible for the $70 price, even though Verizon's announcement didn't mention that caveat. Worse, existing subscribers who tried to upgrade were told that the standard price could be as high as $200 a month. When we last wrote about this on April 25, the poorly implemented rollout was still causing confusion for both customers and Verizon customer service reps. Verizon promised to get the gigabit upgrade system working by April 30, saying that existing customers who upgraded to gigabit speeds would end up with monthly bills of aroun
