volkswagen pleads guilty in us court in emissions scandal

Volkswagen AG pleaded guilty on Friday to three felony counts as part of a $4.3 billion plea agreement reached with the Justice Department in January over the automaker's massive diesel emissions scandal.
VW general counsel Manfred Doess made the plea on the company's behalf after he said at a hearing in U.S. District Court in Detroit that he was authorised by the board of directors of VW to enter a guilty plea.
"Your honor, VW AG is pleading guilty to all three counts because it is guilty on all three counts," Doess told the court.
Under the deal, VW agreed to sweeping reforms, new audits and oversight by an independent monitor for three years after admitting to installing secret software in 580,000 U.S. vehicles to enable it to beat emissions tests over a six-year period and emit u

takata pleads guilty to fraud in faulty airbag cover-up

The scandal led to the largest US automotive recall ever and affected a staggering 42 million vehicles in the United States alone. Over 100 injuries have been reported and at least 16 people have been killed by the faulty airbags. As part of the $1 billion settlement, Takata has agreed to pay $850 million in restitution to the automakers, a $25 million fine and the company is setting up a separate $125 million fund to compensate the victims and their families. The recall was so large, in fact, there were concerns that the settlement would sink the company and make it even harder for automakers to find replacements. While today's guilty plea will bring some closure to the scandal, Takata is still facing multiple consumer and state-level lawsuits that could end up costing it millions more. Th

rick derringer pleads guilty to bringing a loaded gun on an airplane

Rock guitarist Rick Derringer has pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a $1,000 fine after stepping off a Delta Air Lines flight from Mexico with a loaded handgun in Atlanta's airport.Derringer told a federal air marshal he kept his gun with him on commercial airline flights 30 to 50 times a year, and never before had a problem carrying it through airport checkpoints, prosecutors said.TSA spokesman Mark Howell said earlier that the agency investigates such statements when it can, but there's no way to substantiate claims dating back years. In 2015, some U.S. Congress members said fake weapons, explosives and other contraband went unnoticed in 67 out of 70 tries -- about 96 percent of the time -- at TSA airport checkpoints.Derringer's plea this week involves a single charge: Carrying a Kel-Tec p

takata pleads guilty in air bag scandal, agrees to pay $1b

(DETROIT) — Japanese auto parts maker Takata pleaded guilty to fraud Monday and agreed to pay $1 billion in penalties for concealing an air bag defect blamed for at least 16 deaths, most of them in the U.S.The scandal, meanwhile, seemed to grow wider when plaintiffs' attorneys charged that five major automakers knew the devices were dangerous but continued to use them for years to save money. In pleading guilty, Takata admitted hiding evidence that millions of its air bag inflators can explode with too much force, hurling lethal shrapnel into drivers and passengers. Chief financial officer Yoichiro Nomura spoke on behalf of the Tokyo-based company, saying the conduct was "completely unacceptable."The inflators are blamed for 11 deaths in the U.S. alone and more than 180 injuries worldwide.

takata pleads guilty in airbag debacle, will pay $1 billion fine

As a result, it is confirmed that Takata will pay $1 billion as a fine, of which $850 million will go to automakers affected by the recalls, another $125 million will go toward victims affected by the defect, as well as their families, while the remaining $25 million will cover the criminal charge itself.Takata Corp had been accused of knowingly using faulty airbag inflators despite being aware of their safety risks. When an affected vehicle wrecked, these inflators would deploy with too much force, launching shrapnel at the drivers and passengers. Those inflators went on to cause multiple deaths and numerous injuries, not to mention the l
