spaces co-working: working from home is overrated

Working from home can be great. No one's gonna drain the coffee pot before you get there; no one's gonna drop a "what's happening?" on you when you're in the flow; and, yes, pants are optional. But it can be lonely, and it's nice to have people to bounce your work off of. When you're a one-man team, or your team is spread out, you might consider a co-working space. And if you're going that far, then you might as well consider Spaces co-working!I'm Michael Fisher –MrMobile to the world– and I normally just have one weirdo I share an office with (Justus knows he's a weirdo; it's okay). Recently he and I got to check out Spaces co-working on Newbury Street in Boston. There, we shared offices with software developers, lawyers, artists, and many others – and ate tons of free hummus in the proce

scientists uncover new facts concerning working memory in children

Researchers from the Higher School of Economics conducted a meta-analysis by compiling data across 17 neuroimaging studies on working memory in children. The data obtained shows concordance in frontoparietal regions recognized for their role in working memory as well as regions not typically highlighted as part of the working memory network, such as the insula. The results were published in the article 'N-back Working Memory Task: Meta-analysis of Normative fMRI Studies With Children' in a top journal in the field, Child Development.
Working memory refers to the system that helps us keep things in mind while performing complex tasks such as reasoning, comprehension and learning. For example, we use our working memory to remember a shopping list or a telephone number, or to calculate how lo

can't afford an office on rent? try co-working spaces, they're much cheaper

Co-working spaces are the new garages of entrepreneurs. While many successful entrepreneurs started their businesses out of garages in the past, new-age ones with limited funds are heading to something known as co-working spaces. The benefit: They get an office with ready infrastructure at affordable rates. Saving on upfront costs and the flexibility of scaling up or cutting down on office space based on the business’ performance are making co-working offices a big draw for those wanting to start a new venture with limited resources. These are the reasons why Turbot HQ India, ...

working copy integrates with the files app and drag and drop – macstories

We use Working Copy every day to collaborate on articles for MacStories and Club MacStories. It’s an excellent tool for working as a group because it lets us easily track edits to documents and stay in sync with the latest version of an article. Ours isn’t the most common use for an iOS Git client – it’s usually used by developers – but it serves to illustrate the flexibility of Working Copy, which has only grown more useful with an update that incorporates new iOS 11 functionality.Working Copy is a file provider in the Files app. This is a very big deal. Ulysses has had external file support for a while, but iOS 11 streamlines the process of accessing articles in our shared repos greatly. With a couple of taps in Ulysses, the document browser opens up with the familiar Files interface. Th

sam smith & timbaland working on new music

Sam Smith has been noticeably absent from the public spotlight for the past year, but a new Instagram post with Timbaland suggests new music may be on the way. Over the weekend, the legendary producer shared a photo with Smith in the studio, saying, "It was a pleasure working this man."There's no info on what the two were working on but one can assume a follow up to Smith's 2014 debut In the Lonely Hour should be on its way before too much longer now, with this possible team up further feeding anticipation. See Timbaland's post here:It was a pleasure working this man @samsmithworld #puretalent #goodvibes #makingmemories and #timeless #music --------A post shared by Timbo the King (@timbaland) on Apr 7, 2017 at 5:41pm PDT

depression simulator 'please knock' arrives september 7th

Depression is a common experience for many in gaming, including those who spend their time working in isolation as independent developers. "I have met many people in our industry who either are or have suffered from depression, and it shouldn't come as a surprise," Levall said in March. "For many of us, our work is our passion. The downside to that is that working overtime leads to burnout, which in itself is a gateway to depression. There is also the economical stress of working as an indie developer, or the stress of knowing how hard it is to find a new job should your studio go bankrupt or your project (is) shelved."

a heavy working memory load may sink brainwave 'synch'

view more Credit: Picower Institute for Learning and MemoryEveryday experience makes it obvious - sometimes frustratingly so - that our working memory capacity is limited. We can only keep so many things consciously in mind at once. The results of a new study may explain why: They suggest that the "coupling," or synchrony, of brain waves among three key regions breaks down in specific ways when visual working memory load becomes too much to handle."When you reach capacity there is a loss of feedback coupling," said senior author Earl Miller, Picower Professor of Neuroscience at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory. That loss of synchrony means the r

greek doctors to walk out wednesday | news

Doctors at state hospitals are to walk off the job from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday to protest draft legislation foreseeing an overhaul of their working hours.Referring to the government as “thieves,” the Federation of Greek Hospital Doctors (OENGE) said the new regulations “demolish any sense of normality in doctors’ working hours.”Doctors have staged similar walkouts in recent weeks to protest a new wage structure imposed by the government as part of the country’s bailout commitments which, they say, has reduced their salaries further. The latest legislation, according to the union, “incorporates all the reactionary European directives which make working hours more flexible and abolish the established daily and weekly working schedule of doctors.”

here's to the four day working week, well paid working week at least

Surely you’re going back full-time now the kids are in high school? Surely you need the money? What a luxury being able to swan about for a day a week! Shouldn’t you be more focussed on your full-time career? Everyone has an opinion on how my working week should be running. But here’s the thing. I get paid to work here for four days. My actual working week runs to the full seven and then some. And that statement won’t surprise any working mother. On my day off I clean the house, run errands, tend to the garden, I get to the doctors, or the bank, I volunteer at my children’s schools, or help neighbours with chores, if I have time among all the other things that need to get done. More so now I'm the only one at home to do them. It’s a rare moment where I might pick up a book, one I have to rea

it's time to work on a rethink of the 38-hour week

The court that in 1947 determined to reduce weekly working hours in Australia from 44 to 40 understood that working hours are not set in stone, but must change with the times. The Commonwealth Arbitration Court noted in its 1947 decision that 100 years prior in England a 10-hour day or a 60-hour week was enacted, that in Australia 90 years earlier an eight-hour day or 48-hour week was achieved in limited cases, and that 20 years earlier the same court had awarded a 44-hour week. The court concluded that there was "no reason to assume that the capacity of industry has ended at 44 hours".
Illustration: Joe Benke In 2018 there is also no reason to assume that in Australia a reduction in hours in the working week has reached its limit at 38 hours. In France a 35-hour week has been implemented
