scenes from friendship park, the only place on the border where people can talk

The border between the United States and Mexico stretches almost 2,000 miles. When it reaches the westernmost end of the country, there’s an 18-foot-tall fence that continues into the Pacific Ocean. It’s here at the beach, with San Diego, California on one side and Tijuana, Mexico on the other, that we reach Friendship Park—the only place along those 2,000 miles of border where people in the United States and people in Mexico can talk face-to-face. On MTV's podcast "The Stakes," I visited Friendship Park to share stories from this bi-national meeting place. A few names have been changed to protect their identities.Subscribe to "The Stakes" and other fine MTV Podcasts productions on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify.Mukta MohanThis is the closest you can get to the border fence fro

the only 4 types of friends you need in life

Are you aware that as you grow up, friendship is the thing that drifts away most easily? Work, vacation, relationships, family times — they’re all so important to life that it’s just hard to put friendship at a higher priority.  Have you ever been at supper at a friend’s home, you and your friends just didn’t have anything to talk about and had to force yourselves to just talk about something, like “so how have you been recently?”, or “oh the pasta is really nice…”?This kind of awkward situation only leaves us wondering what friendship is for; but then, we also feel uncomfortable to have to declare that friendship has to be for something — how contradicting we are. Here’s some good news for you…Friendship does have its purpose, and having a purpose doesn’t ruin true friendship.People come t

randwick guineas day racing preview

Race 1
Mouth-watering clash: She Will Reign looks tough to beat in the Reisling Stakes at Randwick. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.auYou will hardly find a more exciting start to a day of racing than the Reisling Stakes. The clash between Houtzen and She Will Reign is a mouth-watering one, but we may have to wait until Golden Slipper Day as Houtzen looks set to stay in Brisbane. The fact She Will Reign won the Inglis Nursey on a heavy track does make her very tough to beat as she builds to her grand final in a fortnight.Race 2The Todman Stakes is a far more competitive race than the Reisling Stakes and will give punters a real insight into the Golden Slipper. Menari was scratched as a short-priced favourite in the Skyline Stakes last weekend and he won a barrier trial earlier this week in impr

is it a man's world? how women are making their mark on racing

Look at the start list for any of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines and men and women appear to be on equal footing. The same can’t be said for a racecard, but over the past 45 years there have been some major milestones for female jockeys. On the eve of International Women’s Day (8 March 2017), and with the launch of The Silk Series—  a pioneering new £100,000 race series for female jockeys — we celebrate some of the big moments.1972The first ever race for female jockeys took place at Kempton Park, and was won by Meriel Tufnell.1972Meriel Tufnell became Britain’s first female Champion Jockey.1973Meriel Tufnell became European female Champion Jockey.1976Diana Thorne became the first woman to ride a winner under National Hunt rules.1982Geraldine Rees became the first female jockey to

facebook's snapchat-like stories are now available worldwide

Facebook's quest to clone Snapchat features wherever possible just took its next logical step. Just a couple of months after it started testing Stories in the main Facebook app, the social network has rolled out the feature to many (though currently not all) users worldwide. As with similar efforts in Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, you can stitch together photos and videos to share stories that vanish after 24 hours. It won't be at all shocking if you've used any of those apps, but its presence in the core Facebook app is particularly significant.

brie larson made emma stone cry at the oscars, but in a good way

Emma Stone kept her composure as she won her first Oscar last night, but the waterworks started flowing as soon as she spotted her pal Brie Larson.Larson — who won the Best Actress prize last year for her moving performance in Room — shared a sweet pic of her hugging Stone backstage after Stone took home the same award for La La Land. “You know what’s better than winning? Watching your friends win,” she wrote. In a video of the emotional moment shared by The Academy’s Instagram, Stone breaks into tears, saying, “Oh, now I start to cry” as she and Larson hug. “Wanna go?” Larson eventually asks, and they head off together, presumably to compare Oscars and continue being the embodiment of friendship goals. Here's hoping this supportive, picture-perfect friendship extends way past awards season.

snapchat, instagram stories... messenger day? how facebook is getting in on the

What is Messenger Day and why should I care about it?The original premise of Snapchat was to be able to send and receive photos and videos that disappear after a certain amount of time (around 10 seconds), and if the person you sent them to screenshotted 'em, you'd be alerted and thus able call them out on it. After a few months, Snapchat expanded and introduced its story feature, meaning that users could upload their Snapchat shenanigans to their public story for 24 hours before having them vanish.Instagram soon followed suit and introduced Instagram Stories, giving users a multicolored circle around their icon to let others know that they've posted a new photo or video to their story. Then, Instagram took it one step further and introduced Live Stories, allowing users to livestream their
