kansas shooting: victim's dad warns indian parents about us

The father of one of the Indian men who were shot at a Kansas bar in what may have been a racially-motivated attack Wednesday night pleaded to parents in India to consider keeping their children from entering the U.S. amid an environment of fear and hysteria.Jaganmohan Reddy, whose 32-year-old son Alok Madasani was wounded in the shooting, told the Hindustan Times that he was worried xenophobia in the U.S. was worsening under President Donald Trump. Reddy said he had asked his son to move back to India before a gunman opened fire, injuring Madasani and killing his son’s friend, Srinivas Kuchibhotla.“The situation seems to be pretty bad after Trump took over as the U.S. president,” Reddy said. “I appeal to all the parents in India not to send their children to the United States in the prese

the making of music | eurekalert! science news

These days, it's a territory mostly dominated by the likes of Raffi and the Wiggles, but there's new evidence that lullabies, play songs, and other music for babies and toddlers may have some deep evolutionary roots. A new theory paper, co-authored by Graduate School of Education doctoral student Samuel Mehr and Assistant Professor of Psychology Max Krasnow, proposes that infant-directed song evolved as a way for parents to signal to children that their needs are being met, while still freeing up parents to perform other tasks, like foraging for food, or caring for other offspring. Infant-directed song might later have evolved into the more complex forms of music we hear in our modern world. The theory is described in an open-access paper in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior. Music

2017 new york toy fair: hackable toys

As a Maker educator who works with teachers, librarians, and parents, I get asked a lot about what learning toys and kits I think are worthwhile. That’s why I love to stroll around Toy Fair in New York and see what new products are on the horizon. This year’s fair offered a lot of tempting possibilities, which I’ll be sharing in a series of reports over the next few days.Among the playthings that caught my eye were several that were just asking to be hacked. Of course, it’s mostly adults who have the skill (and the funds) to add rocket power to a model cars or weaponize an RC robot. But for the products below, motivated older kids can probably get into the act as well, with a little adult help.At first glance, ZoZbot looks like a standard off-the-shelf robot. But it’s actually a robot plat

pink pussy hats and shouts to hillary: it’s woke oscars bingo

Giving an Oscars speech can be confusing. (I would know.) Are you supposed to thank your parents, your agent, or Jesus, exclusively? Should you take the opportunity to self-promote, self-deprecate, or self-immolate? And most significantly: should you get political, or should you shut the fuck up, you Hollywood elitist? This year, as we rapidly approach the end of the great human experiment, that final question looms particularly large, amplified by another haunting query that plagues the patricians and the plebes alike: rage against the big, dumb, flaming machine that is the Trump administration, or pretend everything is fine, no, really, haha, it's fine, and just eventually die? It's likely that most winners will choose the former. Because, you see, my fellow couch people, this year is no

how long is too long to leave up your indoor fort?

So you took our advice and decided to build yourself an indoor fort. Yay for you! We totally support indoor forts staying up as long as possible — after all, you did go through all that effort — but if you're not sure how long is too long, just ask yourself these five questions.
1. Is it falling down? Yes: If you can salvage your fort with minimal repairs, go for it. If you basically have to rebuild, take it as a sign that it's time to restore your living room to its natural state. No: Good job! Are you a professional builder? An architect? A Lego expert?
2. Do you need the sheets from the fort in order to change the sheets on your bed? Yes: Don't be ridiculous (or dirty!). You will have to sacrifice your fort in the name of cleanliness. No: You own an impressive number of sheets! For th

get out understands the black body

[This post contains spoilers.]In America, my body does not belong to me. This is the message that Jordan Peele's electrifying horror film Get Out has for black men. Written and directed by Peele, it mines a potentially horrifying event: Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), who is black, accompanies his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) to her parents' home for the weekend — a benign enough event on its own, until the film spins it into a chilling Twilight Zone-esque horror show. In horror, black men traditionally possess one of two roles: a first-act victim or the comic relief that provides running commentary on how black people don't go upstairs and investigate a scary noise, they run out the house, or some other variation on the white people are dumb and get killed joke. (Those black men invar

hidden folks review: a cute and whimsical where's waldo for the digital age

Move over Waldo, there's a new bunch of findable characters in town!Growing up I had a plethora of books and games dedicated to finding things. Where's Waldo, I Spy (shoutout to my fellow Canucks), and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego were just a few of the titles that would occupy my time and give my parents a few minutes of peace before I was causing some sort of ruckus or fighting with my older brother. While I haven't picked up a Where's Waldo book in 15 years, Hidden Folks made me feel just like I had one in my hands again, but the experience was even more mesmerizing than I remembered.Play Hidden Folks today!GameplayAs you can imagine, the gameplay in Hidden Folks is pretty straightforward. You are given a list of characters, animals, and objects you have to find in each scene by

cutbacks in military child care at 2 bases due to federal hiring freeze, offi...

President Donald Trump's decision to impose a hiring freeze of civilian employees in the federal government is being blamed by some military officials for a reduction in child care services at Army installations in Wiesbaden, Germany and Fort Knox, KY. musician angela parrish's real-life journey from kansas to 'la la land'

Angela Parrish is one of millions of movie-goers who will be rooting for La La Land to sweep the Oscars on Sunday night, but she has a couple of unique reasons for wanting the film to triumph. Her voice is the first one you hear in the movie's opening scene on the ramp connecting the 110 Freeway to the 105, and how she went from playing piano in a Studio City restaurant to singing "Another Day of Sun" parallels the stories of the two leading characters, portrayed by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.Parrish, 30, grew up in Newton, Kansas, where her father used to sing her to sleep every night with gospel songs and Marty Robbins tunes. loire-atlantique: disparition d'une famille de quatre personnes
